About this Item
A vividly written, highly perceptive account of life and politics in Chicago based upon the author's visit to the city in 1893 - during a time of economic depression following the triumph of the World's Columbian Exposition. Stead (1849-1912), an erudite and well known British journalist and minister, interviewed notable public figures, as well as people who were poor, in jail, or involved in criminal activities or political graft. His account of Chicago and its people remains valuable, unsurpassed in its scope and ability to capture images of what it was to live in the city at that time. Octavo: xvi, 460, [4] p. with a frontispiece and the two color folding map of the Levee District identifying the locations of brothels, saloons, and pawnbrokers. Original burgundy cloth binding, with gilt titles. Some very light pencil marginalia, with tiny ink initials to the top corner of the front pastedown. Just the slightest hint of foxing, with a bit of mild wear to the corners and tips; otherwise very good. Seller Inventory # 75220
