About this Item

Description:

Bristol. Printed by John Taylor, 1835. 15pp plus 7 pp of Tables of compensation. Elephant folio with watered silk to boards. Printed label to upper board. Association copy. Dedication on ffep: Presented to Mr J J Sheat by William Herapath one of the Comm rs for compensating the sufferers. This copy has been professionally re-backed by Period Binders and bought for almost £79 in 2001. The upper board is in nice condition; the lower board stained and slightly bubbled. The text explains the process they adopted to assess the compensation at the lowest cost to the ratepayers of the city by largely eschewing the use of lawyers! The whole process seems to have been completely transparent, too and the payouts made quickly after determination. The amounts paid, however, were probably not received with joy by the claimants. Prior to taking over as licensee in 1829 (to 1883), James John Sheat is listed at the Three Crowns, John Street, Bristol as a cooper, later he is listed as maltster and cooper. In 1865 he was a churchwarden at St.Philip & Jacob s church which was just a stone s throw from the Three Crowns. John Street ran from Jacob Street to Narrow Plain with Sloper s Lane leading through to St.Philip & Jacob s church. Herapath was a Maltster of 56 Old Market Street, Bristol. This area was cleared in 1967 to make way for the Temple Way / Old Market roundabout scheme. Extra shipping needed outside UK. Seller Inventory # 10539
