First edition, first impression. Greene's early masterpiece - scarce in the first printing. Good+: firm and square binding in the publisher's red cloth; some dustiness and marking to the cloth; bright gilt lettering; a tiny nick to the cloth to each spine tip; rubbed to the tips of the corners; a couple of cracks to the binding, but no looseness at all; tanned to the edge of the page block; small loss to the top corner of one page (margin only) and with some modest signs of handling and marking to the pages; tiny stamp '12 APR 1939' to the rear pastedown.
