About this Item
London: Jonathan Cape, 1965. First Edition. Small quarto (18cm), 111pp. Publisher's illustrated price-clipped dust jacket. Boards full bound in dark brown cloth with gilt, blue, and red stamping on spine. Gilt endsheets. Dust jacket generally scuffed and soiled with toning at edges, minor creasing, and a tape repaired tear at the spine joint; verso lightly toned at margins with tape repair to spine. Board corners and spine ends bumped with sunning at margins and foredge of covers bowing away from text; top edge soiled and binding slightly cocked. First free endsheet has "50" rubbed away, otherwise pages clean. A Very Good copy in a Very Good dust jacket. Kingsley Amis wrote this humorous little book under a pseudonym, presenting himself as the Chief of Staff for the British Secret Service. The book details the pros and cons of certain kinds of liquor, how to dress inconspicuously, and lists some of Bond's adventures as sources for the advice. The dust jacket is also reversible, claiming to be the Bible revised as literature, so it can be read during "work in the field.". Seller Inventory # 30552
