Illustrated with a steel-etched frontispiece, etched title leaf, and 38 etched plates. Originally published in 20 numbers in 19 parts (the last two numbers published in one part) between March 1852 and September 1853, published in one volume 12th Sept. 1853. All Walter Smith First edition issue points bar 1, present including: elgble on page 19 line 6; chair for hair on page 209, line 23; counsinship on page 275 line 22. Referenced by Sadleir (682) and Smith (82/83). Part of the original blue paper covers visiblr in the gutter of page 257. Pin-prick holes to the inner page margin. Scattered, marginal foxing to the pages, heavily tanned to the plates. Bound in half morocco leather over cloth boards with a black label. Provenance: no signatures or bookplates. Approximately 8 ¼ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine fair condition gilt titles, 5 raised gilt edged bands, worn, marked and frayed with some loss to the leather. Joints poor condition leather split but joint beneath structurally sound. Corners fair condition bumped and worn. Boards fair to good condition half leather with cloth boards, worn, rubbed with some loss. Page edges good condition red, top edge slightly darkened. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition sound. Paste downs good condition tanned. End papers good condition some internal end papers are tanned and foxed. Title good condition heavily tanned and foxed to the engraved title. Pages good condition some foxing and marks, heavily tanned to the plates.
