Founded when several editors of the Chicago Review resigned after the contents of the Spring 1958 issue were suppressed, in large part due to excerpts accepted from William Burroughs then-novel-in-progress, Naked Lunch. Taking the contents from that issue, editors Irving Rosenthal and Paul Carroll put out the inaugural issue under the banner of "Big Table," a name suggested by Jack Kerouac. This first issue was then promptly seized by the US Postal Service for obscenity. In the wake of Judge Woolsey's ULYSSES decision, the magazine was later allowed to distribute and publish and went on to become "crucial in bringing the underground to those [.] waiting in the wings of small-town America" (Clay and Phillips, p. 45). This issue prints Kerouac's "Old Angel Midnight," two texts by Edward Dahlberg, ten "episodes" from NAKED LUNCH, and three poems by Gregory Corso. Mild rubbing, darkening to the covers.
