Volumes 1-9 complete. Bound in publisher's navy cloth, spines stamped in gilt and red. First edition. (First printings with the earlier volumes all lacking additional printing statements and the latter few having complete number lines.) Near Fine overall, a few bookseller pencil notations to prelims but contents free of markings, light wear. Vol. 4 back cloth and vol. 2 front cloth a little stained. Vol. 2 & 6 spines rubbed. Two of the unprinted jackets included, worn. The one and only BAL. Still the standard bibliography for American literature and a necessity for booksellers, even if some of the authors included have become ridiculously obscure with time (unless, for instance, the name Christopher Pearce Cranch rings a bell to you, or Thomas Allibone Janvier, Jones Very, etc.). This is nine of the 10 volumes of the set, missing Volume 10. set of 10 volumes. The first seven volumes were compiled by Blanck, a noted authority on American literature. Volumes 8 and 9 were edited and completed by Michael Winship, who also compiled the 10th volume, a selective Index of titles, publishers, and dates. The individual volumes are of mixed editions but all were published as part of a matched set with black cloth bindings with title on red cloth spine label.
