About this Item
1897. First edition. xiii, 412pp. and 12 black and white illustrations and maps. Sir Ellis Ashmead Bartlett (1849-1902) was an American-born British Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1880 to 1902. Throughout his political career his main interest was Britain's imperial role, and he believed that Turkey's security was crucial to the Empire, and he was well known as a supporter of Turkish interests. In April-May 1897 he travelled to Greece and Turkey with his son as a guest of the Sultan, where he observed events in the Graeco-Turkish War. In this book he describes his own and his son's personal experiences during the campaign in Thessaly, and their subsequent visit to Athens and Constantinople. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the front board and spine. The is an ex-library copy with the usual library indications and signs of use. The boards have shelf wear with soiling and some staining and the spine ends and corners are bumped with some damage and a little loss to the cloth on the corner tips and both spine ends. There are faint traces of a removed label near the bottom of the spine and bottom edge of the front board. The spine edges are rubbed with two holes of about 1/4" in the cloth on the front spine edge. The contents are tight and the pages largely clean apart from marks from finger smudges and a few other stains. These are most noticeable on the first and last thirty or so pages, although some others are affected elsewhere within the book. The endpapers and first and last few pages, including the title page, are foxed. The tissue guarding the frontispiece is heavily foxed. The fore and bottom edges of the frontispiece are creased with small tears and a piece missing from the fore edge. The edges have been repaired and reinforced on the reverse with tape. Page ix has some creasing and nicks on the fore edge. The front fixed endpaper has some library labels, overlaid with a 'withdrawn' stamp, and the title page has a small faint blind stamp together with some lines drawn near the title. There is a circular stamp and some reference numbers on the reverse of the title page and the rear free endpaper has traces of a removed pocket and there is a label on the rear fixed endpaper. These appear to be the only library indications but it is possible that something has been missed elsewhere within the book. Overall, this is prpbabl;y best regarded as being a sound reading and reference copy of a hard-to-find first edition of this work. PLEASE NOTE: Heavyish book so a little extra may be needed for shipping to non-UK customers. Seller Inventory # VITurkey001
