1st American reissue edition. Originally published in 1934, this early Greene novel deals with the injustice of man s justice. Greene s Russian roulette style detective story about bedfellow rivalries between capitalists and communists. Praised by Ezra Pound and Ford Maddox Ford. The novel came to life in 1938 when a murder similar to its plot occurred, and Greene for a time feared his arrest by civil authorities.
