First edition in English. Agnolo Firenzuola (1493-1543) was an Italian intellectual, poet, playwright, prose author, twice abbot of San Salvadore, a re-writer of Aesopian fables, and writer of burlesque and satirical verse. This work has remained a favorite through time, being a reflective picture of ideal women, discussing perfect proportions, grace, manners, femininity, how men should and would react and engage with beautiful women, with each part of the body discussed for a variety of diverse women, (such as the foot, cheeks, and hand), how each part should be adorned accordingly, and more. A lovely early leather binding on a delightful 17th-century book. Many pages are still remain uncut and unopened. Tiny surface nicks and intermittent rubs to the spine and corner edges, tan offsetting at the end-paper borders where the leather edges rest when closed, else tight, sturdy and very good in three-quarter polished blue leather over gilt-edged blue linen, spine displays raised bands, with decorated compartments that include gilt boxes and titles, blue end-papers, upper page edges gilt.
