First Edition. 8vo, in the publisher's original printed wrappers. This is a fine copy with the yap edges in near fine condition and the slightest trace of darkening at the edges. THE AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK. There are several themes at work in this play mostly about the nature of Southern small town life. It takes on a rather mystical angel at various times through the elusive character of the Conjure Man. Produced on stage in 1940, its initial run was quite brief (only about a week) and it was not published until six years later. It was reworked into 'Orpheus Descending' in the 1950s, after Williams had established a name for himself. Seller Inventory # 27698
