Comprehensive study of art in North-East New Guinea including geographical setting, discovery and colonization, material, social, and religious culture. Summarization of what the author defines as three periods starting at the turn of the century: delineating different styles with first wave of collecting (decorative art) into the 1920ies, research in social anthropology and cultural history into the mid 1940ies, and finally the trend of art history with scientific approach into the late 1950ies. Chapter two examines techniques, materials and objects in carving and engraving, painting, and knitting, and chapter three motifs. Profusely illustrated with color and b/w photographs and drawings throughout text and five additional plates with color illustrations. Extensive bibliography and notes, and list of plates and figures. DJ with small tear on front and small tear and creasing on back covered in modern brodart. Some minor bumps and chipping at corners, and edges. Hinges starting. Blind stamp on title-page (Library of Norman Hurst). Book block moderately yellowed at edges.
