Novel set in England during World War II, about "an industrious, patriotic, home-loving Englishwoman, a conscientious wife and mother and an adherent of the Catholic faith," who falls in love -- "a blinding and terrifying love" -- with one of the three Italian prisoners of war who are billeted with her family on their farm.
