8vo, pp. xvi, 374, 36 (publisher's catalogue dated November 1873); with 'map of author's route' facing title; a little foxing to half-title and fore-edge; very good in original brown decorative cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in gilt and blocked in black, dark green endpapers; rebacked with spine laid down (a few small areas of loss), a little wear to corners; old ink stamp to half-title.First edition, relating Maughan's travels to Cairo, the Pyramids, the Nile, Sinai, Aqaba, Petra, Hebron, Jerusalem, Damascus, Baalbek, and Beirut. Maughan (1836-1914) worked as a banker in Edinburgh, London, and Rome. 'An illness having caused a break in the continuity of my business career,' he writes, 'I thought that a tour in the East would be a pleasant and profitable mode of passing a portion of my time.
