"This is a heart-warming story of an extended friendship with SAchweitzer and his staff as told in the first person by Erica Anderson, noted photographer. Many books about Schweitzer have been written by people who knew him only briefly. Erica Anderson visited Lambarene to make the film about Schweitzer's life and work that was seven years in production, and that won an Oscar, the Academy Award for the best documentary of 1958. Since that time Mrs. Anderson had visited the Schweitzer hospital regualrly. To date she has made eighteen trips in all. Her book is rich in glimpses into the personality of Dr. Schweitzer and with realistic descriptions of the work he does and the problems he handles. Most other books about Dr. Schweitzer demand an knowledge of theology and philosophy. This warm and human narrative, with its many revealing anexdotes and conversations with Dr. Schweitzer, will help many to understand, for the first time, the man behind the legend. Excertps from conversations with Dr. Schweitzer that reveal his many-faceted personality, from Albert Schweitzer's Gift of Friendship: ON WORK: "To a small boy itching to get back to work after a lunch break: "You have a big secret, whether you know it or not. The secret of enjoying your work. It is a great wisdom, my boy. Hang onto it." (Page 129). ON THE VALUE OF ROUTINE: "In nature most people search for the unusual, the unexpected. But it's the monotony of nature that's dear to me. Like the monotony of my daily routine. I look forward to knowing what will happen on Monday and that the same thing will happen on Tuesday and again on Wednesday. I am not much of a traveler. To pack and live out of a suitcase is something I do only when I have to." (Page 86). ON THE PRESSURE OF TIME: "You know what I would really like to do if I had time? Just once or twice, to get up without feeling tired and to go to bed without knowing how many things are still left undone. What a luxury that would be!" (Page 83). Seller Inventory # 007723
