Gaugain + TP + 2 leaves = Dedication + [i]-ix = Introduction + half title + [13]-409 + [411] = Instructions to the Binder with Errata on verso + 1 blank leaf; Volume 2: 1 blank leaf + TP + [1]-431 + [433] = Errata + 1 blank leaf; Quarto. First Edition.First Edition of Sir William Forbes' Life of BeattieThe first edition, containing eight plates of manuscript and music. The early biography of the poet, moral philosopher and literary critic James Beattie. The book is a compilation of Beattie's letters and manuscripts that is tied together by the commentary of Beattie's friend, Sir William Forbes. Contemporary polished calf boards with light wear to corners. The spines have been rebacked nicely matching leather with gilt decorations and lettering on a black field. Both rear boards are embossed with the circular stamp (2" diameter) in the center of the board: "Public Libraries Glasgow". The inside front board of each book and the facing front fly leaf had former labels which have been neatly removed. The inside cover of Volume 1 has the small (2½" x 3½") former owner's (D. Cuthbertson) crested bookplate. Volume 2 has a small 2-line stamp to the center of the first blank leaf: "Glasgow Public Library" and again on the title page. Both title pages are foxed (volume 1 heavily so because of the frontispiece offset) and have paper repairs to upper right corners where a previous owner's inscriptions have been removed. Otherwise, this is a handsome, tight, clean and wide-margined copy of this excellent early life of Beattie. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Seller Inventory # 841
