About this Item
NEALE, Mary. SOME ACCOUNT OF THE LIFE AND RELIGIOUS EXERCISES OF MARY NEALE, FORMERLY MARY PEISLEY. Principally compiled from her own writings. Dublin: Printed by John Cough, successor to R. Jackson., 1795. First edition. 12mo. 120 pp. Contemporary binding of full mottled calf, with a red label and decorative double-rules gilt-stamped on spine. Binding is edgeworn, with joints starting, but sound. Some edge chipping to spine label. Text is clean but for occasional light foxing. (Sabin 52167). This book recounts the service in England and America of Mary Peisley Neale (1717-1757), a Quaker, principally compiled from her own writings. She began her ministry in England in 1744, arrived in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1753, and later traveled to North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Philadelphia. In 1757, she married Samuel Neale (1729-1792), a notable Irish Quaker minister, who supplied the preface for this book. This copy has a contemporary gift inscription (Dublin, 1795) on the ffep from Thomas Scattergood (American, 1748-1814), the Quaker quietist preacher, to his "beloved" sister Hannah Evans. Scattergood traveled extensively in America (speaking out against slavery when in the American south) and, from 1794-1800, in Great Britain. The book also has other ownership marks from the Evans family: a nineteenth-century book label (Jonathan Evans, Philadelphia) and a twentieth-century ink ownership (W. B. Evans, 1933) on front endpapers. Seller Inventory # 80361
