About this Item
These copies of the Annual Reports of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions were printed for the Board by Crocker & Brewster of Boston. The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) was among the first American Christian missionary organizations. It was created in 1810 by recent graduates of Williams College. In the 19th century it was the largest and most important of American missionary organizations and consisted of participants from Protestant Reformed traditions such as Presbyterians, Congregationalists, and German Reformed churches. Before 1870, the ABCFM consisted of Protestants of several denominations, including Congregationalists and Presbyterians. However, due to secessions caused by the issue of slavery and by the fact that New School Presbyterian-affiliated missionaries had begun to support the Presbyterian Board of Foregn Missions, after 1870 the ABCFM became a Congregationalist body. The 32nd, September 1841 issue, which measures approximately 6 inches wide by 9 ¾ inches tall by ½ inch thick, contains 228 pages of material related to the Board, its membership, and activities. The book is bound in brown paper covers with black lettering on the front and back, The book contains a number of illustrations, primarily of maps and facilities, to support the text. The pages of the book are in very good condition, with some staining of the end papers and crinckling along the edges. The paper cover is in poor condition, with the front cover detached, major parts of the spine cover missing, edge wear on both front and rear covers, and dirt accumulation on the outer surfaces. Considering that the pages are much more important than the cover, the book earns an overall condition of good/very good. The 33rd , September 1842 issue, which measures approximately 6 inches wide by 9 ¾ inches tall by ½ inch thick, contains 224 pages of material related to the Board, its membership, and activities. The book is bound in brown paper covers with black lettering on the front and back, The pages of the book are in very good condition, with some light staining of the end papers and crinckling along the edges. The paper cover is in fair condition, with the covers detached, edge wear on both front and rear covers, and writing dirt accumulation on the outer surfaces. Considering that the pages are much more important than the cover, the book earns an overall condition of good/very good.
