Ex-libris au dos du plat supérieur. Reconstitution historique du massacre de la Saint-Barthélémy par l'homme de lettres Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870), qui, pour l'occasion fut influencé par les écrits à succès de Walter Scott et de Vigny. Sensible aux écrits des mémorialistes (Brantôme), Mérimée dresse un réquisitoire contre l'intolérance religieuse et les luttes fratricides, questionnant cet épisode historique sanglant, et tentant d'en comprendre les mobiles. Trois volumes in-8 en édition originale. Demi-veau brun d'époque, dos à nerfs orné, tomés 1, 2 et 3, reliure uniforme pour les 3 volumes, tranches marbrées. Bon état général, mors frottés. Edition originale de Clara Gazul, premier ouvrage de Mérimée, "d'une grande rareté" (Carteret), publié anonymement. La préface est signée de son pseudonyme "Joseph L'Estrange". Un des quelques exemplaires avec la mention "Théâtre de Clara Gazul" sur le faux-titre (on rencontre plus communément "Collection des théâtres étrangers"). Sans le très rare portrait de Clara Gazul, qui, suite à un oubli de Sautelet, ne fut inséré que dans une cinquantaine d'ouvrages. Edition originale pour La Jaquerie, troisième ouvrage de l'auteur, imprimé sur les presses d'Honoré de Balzac. Voulant devenir « homme de lettres de plomb », Honoré de Balzac obtient son brevet d'imprimeur en 1826 et rachète aussitôt la fonderie Gille avec quelques associés mais il se ruinera dans l'entreprise, ce qui le ramènera vers la création littéraire.
