About this Item
A scarce document announcing the formation of the short-lived Black Student Congress (BSC), which was formed in Chicago in October 1968 "for the purpose of Black liberation." The group was composed of representatives from black student organizations at 16 Chicago colleges and universities and was chaired by Frank de la Cerna of Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). Its positions reflected the Zeitgeist, and included "support [for] all revolutionary movement [sic] of non-white people in their struggle for liberation against oppression," opposition "to the racist police state in which the Black community is held," the reorientation of curricula "for Black people with Black teacher and Black students [and] the establishment of Black institutions for Black people within the educational framework," etc. This document provides a brief background on the BSC's founding, lists the committee members, positions, and purposes, and describes the organization's structure and how it will be financed. It concludes with an announcement of a BSC lecture series at IIT for the purpose of explaining further about the group's purpose and activities. Although the group's founding has been documented in a number of articles and books on Chicago's black power movements, it appears to have fizzled out soon after it began as nothing exists about any further developments or when it ceased. Not to be confused with other black organizations with the same name operating in other parts of the country. Four corner-stapled 11" x 8 ½" sheets mimeographed on rectos only. Not found by us in OCLC. PROVENANCE: Our copy from the estate of John Bracey, Jr., one of the committee members (whose name is misspelled on the document, and which he has corrected).
