ABEBOOKS.CO.UK LAUNCHES RARE BOOK VALUATION SERVICE TO PUT A PRICE ON THE TREASURES IN YOUR ATTIC

(Victoria, BC - February 15 2005) Ever dusted off an old paperback from the attic and wondered if it was worth a few dollars? AbeBooks.co.uk has launched a rare book valuation service that helps bookworms put a price on their discoveries.

The specially designed Treasures In Your Attic section of the site allows visitors to submit details, including a digital image, and selected submissions will be analyzed and priced by a team of professional booksellers selected from the 12,500 that list books on the AbeBooks sites.

The valuation experts include London’s Maggs Bros, antiquarian booksellers to Queen Elizabeth II, LA’s Heritage Book Shop, Barnaby Rudge Booksellers from Laguna Beach in California and Montreal’s The Book Collector’s Library from Montreal.

AbeBooks is the world’s biggest marketplace for new, used, rare and out-of-print books with more than 60 million books listed for sale. Founded in 1996, the website has revolutionized the antique and rare books industry by giving booksellers access to buyers across the globe.

When piloted last week, Treasures In Your Attic received dozens of intriguing submissions, including an American civil war songbook from pre-1860, a signed first edition Gone With the Wind from 1936, The Poetic Works of Robert Burns from 1787, a signed first edition of The Tales of Edgar Allen Poe from 1914, a first edition Charlie And The Chocolate Factory from 1964 and a signed copy of After The Fall by Arthur Miller from 1964.

“It happens every day – customers contact us about books that have sparked their imagination and they want to know their value,” said Lisa Stevens, VP of marketing at AbeBooks. “It could be a copy that has survived the decades or a signed first edition of a classic. We believe Treasures In Your Attic will be popular because interest in rare books has never been higher. We expect to find some absolute gems but it will also be educational for anyone who loves books.”

Book owners have until March 3 to make a submission and selected book valuations will be featured on the site. An easy-to-navigate panel asks visitors to provide the book’s title, author, publisher, date and place of publication as well as details about its condition and whether it is a first edition, been signed or has a dust jacket.
