About this Item

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. 4 to. Contemp. calf. (16), 586, (36) pp. Armorial engraved bookplate of James Brodie. Joints cracked but firm; a very good, crisp copy. Large as this book is, it is based on an abridged version of Caspar Neumann's (1683-1737) lectures which originally appeared in seven volumes. The two volume Zullichau abridgment of 1756 was probably translated into English by William Lewis' (1708-81) assistant, Alexander Chisholm, and supplemented by Lewis, to which he also added his extensive notes. Neumann was Court Apothecary in Berlin, 1719-37. "The work is an epitome of the chemical knowledge of the time and contains the first exposition of Stahl's phlogiston theory in English." (Cole 973). In its three parts, Neumann treats the chemical history of the mineral, vegetable, and animal kingdoms. D.S.B. X: 25-26. Partington II.703.III. Bolton I. 698. Ferguson II.137. Neu 2937. Wellcome IV.224. See: Hoover Coll., no. 608. Bookseller Inventory # 000098
