The Passage by Justin Cronin

2010 saw a mixture of established writers and some relatively little known authors share the limelight.  The clear leaders in the signed books category were Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom and  The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell. Both novels were acclaimed by the literary critics with Franzen also receiving a hefty plug from Oprah Winfrey. Other established names on the list include Peter Carey, Ian McEwan, Philip Pullman, Joe Hill and Bret Easton Ellis.

The popularity of The Passage by Justin Cronin grew and grew as the year continued. Emma Donoghue’s Room also captured the imagination of many readers with its Joseph Fritzl -inspired plot. The bestselling non-fiction book was Just Kids by Patti Smith, which also won a National Book Award in November. The signed list is dominated by fiction but The Man Who Loved Books Too Much by Allison Hoover Bartlett, a story of theft in the rare book world, is the other notable non-fiction book to make an appearance.
