Wicked Plants by Amy Stewart

Frank McCourt is gone but he’s not forgotten. Tis: A Memoir and Angela’s Ashes both appear on AbeBooks’ list of the top 10 bestselling signed books of the past three months. The Brooklyn-born author died on 19 July but his remarkable tales of life in Ireland and New York continue to resonate with readers and collectors.

Top of the pile is The Angel’s Game by Spanish author Carlos Ruiz Zafón. This novel is simply an international phenomenon with demand for his signed copies coming from fans all over the globe. Set in the 1920s and 1930s, The Angel’s Game combines a man’s love of literature with intrigue and Barcelona’s seedy underbelly. The book is the prequel to The Shadow of the Wind.

Also enjoying strong demand were the latest novels from Richard Russo (That Old Cape Magic) and Pat Conroy (South of Broad). The fortieth anniversary of the first moon landing helped drive demand for Buzz Aldrin’s tale of lunar achievement, Magnificent Desolation. Walter Cronkite’s death on 17 July also spurred interest in signed copies of his 1996 memoir, A Reporter’s Life – an insight into his long career in broadcast journalism.

Another work of non-fiction on the list, Dave Eggers' latest book Zeitoun looks at the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans through the eyes of a single family. Much research went into writing the book, and Eggers worked closely with its subjects toward the finished product.

The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet (a cartography-themed adventure with a 12-year-old hero) by Reif Larsen and The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (a mystery with an 11-year-old heroine) by Alan Bradley are two acclaimed novels that have won a huge following during the summer. Perhaps readers enjoy a story told from a youthful perspective.
