For Native Americans whose history in this hemisphere stretches back perhaps as much as 20,000 years, the 500th anniversary of Columbus's voyage of discovery will not be a time of celebration. Since the arrival of Columbus and the Europeans, the lifestyles, the cultures~indeed, the very existence~of Indians have been under siege. Yet despite the historic impact of the white newcomers, Indians of many tribes have survived their long ordeal. Today they retain much of their traditional culture, the legacy that defines them. Indeed, not only have Indians survived, they have reasserted their deepest values and have renewed their pride, and these victories give this book a theme and a reason for being. The story begins in the earliest days of European exploration and settlement in the New World, as the white man shattered the lives of native peoples through conquest, trade, epidemics, and the introduction and spread of the horse and gun. It continues into the Colonial era, as the various tribes became embroiled in conflicts among the French, English, and Spanish. Throughout the expansionist era of Manifest Destiny, pioneers and Presidents conspired to take Indian lands, as well~intentioned reformers and missionaries mounted crusades to assimilate the Indians into white Christian culture. Today, more than ever, Indians straddle two societies, as this rapidly growing minority increases its landholdings, builds a professional class, and experiences a cultural resurgence that has caught the interest of the American public. Since its founding, the Smithsonian Institution has been at the forefront of ethnography, ethnology, and archeology, and other scholarly aspects of Indians in North America. Historian Herman J. Viola, who has dedicated his career to the study of American Indians and the American West, draws on the Native Americans' tradition of oral history, the archeological record, and the unparalleled resources of the Smithsonian to strip away the myths and stereotypes and to reveal what the American Indians were, and are, really like. By offering many Indian stories that have never before appeared in book form ~ true stories of the meetings between the red man and the white man ~ Viola illustrates an exchange far more complex than is generally realized, an exchange that has transformed Indian lives forever as well as having added vital new dimensions to white culture. Indian traditions of individual independence, personal religion, spiritual attachment to the land, valor in battle, and self~reliance have enriched the lives of many non~Indians. Bursting with 181 full~color and 133 black~and~white photographs of artifacts, digs, Indian portraits, and landscapes, along with special maps and innovative picture stories, and boasting a highly readable text by one of America's leading historians, After Columbus is as fascinating, as intricate, and as intelligent as the multi~faceted culture it reveals.

Like all the great figures of pre~Islamic literature, Lab?d Ibn Rabiah emerges, blurred and distorted, from a shimmering mirage of legend and anecdote. His qasidah or ode was sung sometime around A.D. 600. As William R. Polk describes it, The Golden Ode epitomizes the intensely parochial nature of pre~Islamic Arab desert life: "They lived. breathed, fought, and sang for and about loyalty, pride, and antagonism so intensely localized as to include only a hundred or so other human beings, their clans, and to exclude the rest of the world." Here Professor Polk offers four avenues to an appreciation of The Golden Ode. First, in the introduction, various aspects of the life of the desert, the language of the poet, and the nature of his audience are discussed. Second, a fairly literal translation of the Arabic verse is presented. Third, detailed notes supplement the English translation. Finally photographs taken during a 1,500~mile camel safari, which led Professor Polk and his photographer~companion through many of the areas in Arabia where Labid lived, attempt to capture the mood presented in each verse. By centering his translation and commentary on this important pre~Islamic ode, Professor Polk is able to reveal the unique and universal elements that are the distinguishing features of the poetic, social, and cultural significance of Labid's masterpiece. The remarkable journey undertaken by the translator and the photographer is in itself a most ambitious adventure and research endeavour that has endowed their work with what Mounah A. Khouri has called "the clearest vision of pre~Islamic Arabia ever achieved by a Western scholar." "A very rare combination of good writing, good scholarship, an instinctively solid literary understanding, and a sympathy of vision both personal and controlled. . Perhaps the most intelligent and acceptable line~by~line commentary on Labid's poem we have.".

In traditional Chinese culture, poetry and painting were different expressions of the same art, brought together by men of letters who painted to give light to their poetic ideas. The apparently simple colours and spontaneous brush strokes, the subtle balance of shape and space within the composition, the emphasis on narrowly~defined subject matter, all create a visual poetry only found in Chinese art. This book, by a Chinese artist and teacher, interprets the unfamiliar materials and techniques of Chinese painting to introduce the reader to a new world of artistic expression. Step~by~step, beginning with the simplest strokes, the author shows how to create, and then refine, the flowers, trees, birds and other elements central to Chinese painting. She goes on to demonstrate how to combine those separate elements in bigger compositions; the many finished paintings in the book offer inspiration to the student seeking to expand an existing talent. Throughout, the illustrations are allowed to speak for themselves, so that the student may concentrate on copying the brush strokes and style of the experienced artist. Based on the author's Chinese painting classes for English students, and developed over many years of teaching and exhibiting in Britain, Chinese Painting: Ideas and Inspiration is a stimulating, easy~to~use introduction to an age~old artistic tradition.

This vital study has been updated to take into account the wealth of historical studies published during the past two decades. The first of a two~volume set, this book offers a detailed account of the history, development, ideas, and image of the Zen school of Mahayana Buddhism. Here, Heinrich Dumoulin explores the earliest beginnings of Zen, from its roots in the Buddhist and Yoga traditions of ancient India to the influence of Taoism on its formation and development in China. He also invokes the imposing personalities of Zen Buddhism, among them Sakyamuni, Huineng, Lin~chi, Ma~tsu, Shih~t'ou, and others. In addition, Dumoulin discusses the many and varied expressions of Zen in the art and culture of India and China. The volume also includes six appendices: a list of abbreviations; a chronological table; Chinese characters; genealogical tables; an index of names; and an index of subjects. This superb study captures the essence of Zen Buddhism, clarifying its origins and revealing a richer picture of its history as a whole.

Suzuki is recognized as the foremost exponent of Buddhism to Western culture. In this book, he explores the subjective reality behind the concepts cherished by the sincere believer in the spiritual wealth of the Pure Land of Amida, the Buddhist Paradise to which all Shin devotees aspire. Shin Buddhism stems from the writings and teachings of Shinran, a remarkably charismatic religious prophet of 13th century Japan. Deeply disturbed over the sinful nature of man yet dedicated to bringing him to his rightful salvation, Shinran found solace and strength in Amida Buddha, a loving aspect of the Cosmic Buddha who has forsworn his own enlightenment until all men are saved through his power. From his personal spiritual renewal, he was able to teach men the joyful Ways of Amida, active in each man as he is active in his daily life. Truly to understand what it means to have complete faith in the All~Saving Power of Amida is a formidable task. Words and concepts tend to mislead and confuse, says Dr. Suzuki. Instead he writes to evoke spiritual response and rapport with the underlying religious ethos of Shin believers. There is some spiritual basis for this rapport inasmuch as the Shin sect of Buddhism most closely resembles Christianity. However, Dr. Suzuki is quick to point out that the similarities are more superficial than profound. Nevertheless, this bond, however weak, can help us to penetrate on the deepest level the vision of a reality to be felt and seen in a light other than the one we know. This may be the finest means toward an understanding and respect for the ways and values of another culture.

Translated from ancient texts augmented by modern archaeological findings, these writings now stand resurrected for us to explore a forgotten part of our literary and religious heritage. No one knows who actually wrote down the Bible of the ancient Hebrews; we do know that it was drawn from a rich literature of spiritual expression, composed over many centuries of turbulent history and philosophical debate. The sacred writings we are familiar with~the Old Testament~ survived the destruction of conquering armies and the suppressions of competing faiths. But there were other works, less in keeping with prevailing thought, or incompatible with popular tradition, that were pushed aside. Such are the writings presented here. The majority of these books were ascribed to biblical personalities far more ancient than the writings themselves. Because of this falsely ascribed authorship, these works became known as Pseudepigrapha. Most of the books were written between 200 B.C. and A.D. 100, a period long after the lifetimes of the alleged authors included here~Jacob's twelve sons ("The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs") and Solomon ("Psalms" and "Odes"). Summoned from the imagination by the same inspiration that fired the Old Testament texts, The Forgotten Books of Eden rise above the boundaries of tradition and time, bringing us their creators' spiritual vision. Reaching back to events in Genesis, for instance, "The Books of Adam and Eve" give us a vivid sequel to the biblical account of the expulsion from Paradise. "The Odes of Solomon" are some of the most beautiful songs of peace and joy that the world possesses. For vigor and insight, they are paralleled only in the most exalted parts of the Scriptures. These are expressions of the human spirit. Now, with their translation and compilation, we can read them and hear today those long~silent voices proclaim their ancient wisdom and faith.

They not only portray the universal philosophy and practices by which the Himalayan sages live, but also describe in poetic prose the Himalayan landscape and culture. Born in 1925 in a learned Brahmin family in the Himalayas in India, Swami Rama was ordained a monk at a young age by a great sage of the Himalayas. In his early manhood, he was involved in a learning journey from monasteries to caves, studying and living with more than a hundred and twenty sages in the solitude of the Himalayan mountains and the plains of India. From 1939 to 1944, he taught the Upanishads and Buddhist scriptures in various schools and monasteries of India. He then studied Tibetan mysticism from 1946 to 1947. Finally, the arduous years of scriptural study, the endless hours of refining his meditation practices, the tutoring and solitary investigation of higher states of consciousness culminated in his receiving the highest spiritual post in India. In 1949 Swami Rama became the Shankaracharya of Karvirpitharn. He renounced the dignity and prestige of this high office in early 1952. He returned to the Himalayas for the final instructions from his master and to compose his inspirations for coming to the West. For three years he studied Western psychology, philosophy and medicine in Europe. In 1970 he became a consultant at the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas, working on a project called "Voluntary Control of Internal States." He is the founder, president and spiritual head of the world~known organization, the Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy, having its headquarters in America and several centers throughout the world.

Marxist parties played an important role in the system, for they were represented in the Congress, participated in several coalition governments, and were the leading force in the trade~union movement. In 1970, as the world watched, the Marxists attempted to bring about a socialist transition through the existing political system, and Salvador Allende became the first Marxist to be elected president by popular vote in Latin America. However, Allende's attempt to turn Chile into a socialist state was resisted by many factions within Chile, and in 1973 a military coup removed him from office, ending both socialism and democratic politics in Chile. Scholars have written about the lessons of Chile, but they have concentrated on the Allende years, failing to take into account the unique circumstances that brought the Marxist parties into political prominence and then caused their downfall. In this book, Julio Faundez remedies this omission, tracing the development of Chilean politics from 1932 to 1973 and focusing in particular on the participation of Marxist parties. Relating the various phases in the evolution of the political system to the concrete problems that had to be faced, Faundez discusses how class alliances, political mobilization, and the role of organized labour affected developments in the country. Faundez's account of this fascinating and tragic historical episode combines detailed research and rigorous analysis. The book adds an important new perspective to a perennial topic of debate among politicians and political scientists worldwide.

A later book, And it was Morning, dealt with the return of the Jews to their new home of Israel, following the horrors of their most recent European persecution. Now the writer has turned his attention to the least known part of Jewish history: the golden age of Jewish culture in Spain, with the interaction of Jewish, Muslim and Christian cultures, the horrors of the Inquisition and the final banishment of the race from the Iberian peninsula. The Jews had lived in Spain from time immemorial and in the Middle Ages there were large numbers of them in most Spanish cities: and though it is true that Moors and Christians forged between them the destiny of Spain and consequently laid the foundation of the modern world, the achievements of the Spanish Jews were no less splendid. There were financiers and statesmen, poets and musicians, and they were honoured by the rulers of the great cities of Cordoba, Seville, Granada, Toledo, to name but a few. This history ended abruptly: they were persecuted abominably, tortured, burned, imprisoned, dispossessed, and the survivors driven out unmercifully and brutally, and scattered over many countries. Poul Borchsenius has here told their whole story and provides a fascinating record of their literature and art.

That Olivi's Apocalypse commentary was condemned by the pope is well known. Less widely known is that, as part of the process of examination leading to the censure, John's investigators examined other works written by Olivi, including his Commentary on Matthew. In fact, there is evidence that proves at least one of them liked this commentary no more than the one on the Apocalypse. Other evidence suggests that it was so little appreciated that it, too, was condemned at the same time as the Apocalypse commentary. Had his examiners inspected his other gospel commentaries, they would surely have found much to deplore in them as well. Curiously enough, much of Olivi's Matthew commentary is derivative and, by any measure, innocuous. (The same might be asserted of his other gospel commentaries.) The work is, in many ways, a standard, wholly unremarkable product of mendicant academic culture. Produced by a Franciscan lector for use in his order's classrooms, it exhibits to a large degree the kind of exegesis Olivi learned as a student at Paris~and from masters not appointed for being habitually subversive of the "institutional" church" [from the introduction].

Born into a freethinking French Jewish family, Weil was active in Socialist and Communist intellectual circles, worked in factories, and went to fight in the Spanish Civil War until a serious burn sent her to a hospital. In 1940 she became strongly attracted to Roman Catholicism through the Passion of Christ. Her writings continue to inform debates about God and morality and to challenge current views of sacrifice, asceticism, and manual labor. Her brother, Andre Weil, was one of the twentieth century's greatest mathematicians, a founder of the group that revolutionized the field, writing under the name Bourbaki. Using previously unpublished family correspondence and conversations, Sylvie Weil~Simone's niece and Andre's daughter~offers a more authentic personal portrait of her aunt than previous biographers have provided. At Home with Andre and Simone Weil illuminates Simone's relationship with her family, especially with her brother. Simone Weil's many Christian admirers have influenced her legacy, but Sylvie Weil recovers the deeply Jewish nature of her aunt's thought, while wrestling with coming of age in the shadow of two intellectual giants. A rare mixture of warmth and bracing honesty, humor, and depth, At Home with Andre and Simone Weil is an intimate portrait of one of the twentieth century's most intriguing intellectual families.

As well as being a magnificent portrait of Marx and a vivid exposition of his philosophy, it is also a superb evocation of that cast of eccentrics who comprise the international revolutionary movement in the last century. Bravo!" ~A. N. Wilson. Francis Wheen's Karl Marx: A Life is the first major biography since the end of the Cold War of the father of Communism. While previous biographers have suffered from an inability to view Marx and his work apart from the regimes spawned in his name, Wheen gives us not a mythical socialist ogre but a fascinating, maddening, ultimately humane man. Paradox and passion were the animating spirits of Marx's life. A Prussian emigre who would become the picture of a middle~class English gentleman, a fiery agitator who spent most of his time in the scholarly silence of the British Museum Reading Room, a gregarious host who eventually alienated all but one or two friends, Marx had a sweeping, stormy existence that resembled nothing so much as a novel by Laurence Sterne or George Eliot. "Imagine Rousseau, Voltaire, and Hegel fused into one person," said a contemporary, "and you have Dr. Marx." Wheen also illuminates the foggiest questions surrounding Marx's work: Was he, as his detractors have claimed, a self~hating Jew? What did Marx really mean by his famous remark "Religion is the opiate of the masses"? Were the prophecies of The Communist Manifesto mistaken? Does Capital, Marx's masterwork, deserve the ridicule with which modern~day economists have dismissed it? The triumph of Karl Marx is its indelible portrait of the man himself. Marx's lifelong marriage to Jenny von Westphalen, "the most beautiful girl in Trier" and daughter of a redoubtable baron, whose devotion to her husband was tested by decades of poverty and exile, is as affecting a love story as history offers. Even more arresting is Wheen's reconstruction of what is perhaps the most inspiring friendship of the nineteenth century. Friedrich Engels was the heir of the lucrative textile firm Ermen & Engels, an invincibly bourgeois man whose taste for women and fox~hunting knew no bounds. Yet it was Engels who first enlightened Marx on the contradictions of capitalism, and who would later finance him (often with money pilfered from the family strongbox), ghostwrite many of Marx's journalistic pieces, and serve as his tireless defender. From Trier to Berlin, Bonn, Paris, and England ("The rock," Marx lamented, "against which the revolutionary waves break"), Marx lived both at the center and on the fringes of his age. Not above penning pointless book~length jeremiads against rival thinkers while his masterwork went unwritten, or spending the last years of his life engaged in ruinous intrigue presiding over the fractious International Working Men's Association, Marx also managed to change the world. With Karl Marx, Wheen has given us a hugely entertaining biography of one of history's most unforgettable players.

This volume presents to the world for the first time the private sketchbooks of Pablo Picasso. Picasso began these sketchbooks in Barcelona in 1894, at the age of thirteen. For more than seventy years, as the young painter blossomed and matured into the greatest artist of the twentieth century, he kept a record of his ideas and thoughts so that by 1964 there were 175 sketchbooks, a unique and startling picture of the mind of a genius at work. Until now these sketchbooks have been privately held by Picasso's family and scattered around the world. They have been unstudied and unseen by the public. This book and its accompanying exhibition organized by the Pace Gallery bring together the entire complement of drawings~ many of them the basis for Picasso's famous paintings. Through the sketchbooks we see masterpieces take shape. Here in a precise progression of images one can trace the development of such works as the Family of Saltimbanques, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, and the Rape of the Sabines. The jacket of this book is by the artist himself. We have taken it from sketchbook number 77, page 28, dated Dinard, 1922. The notebooks of M. Picasso are a revelation of the master's most intimate and personal vision. They have excited the imagination and the critical talents of six of the greatest American art historians: E. A. Carmean, Sam Hunter, Rosalind E. Krauss, Theodore Reff, Robert Rosenblum, and Gert Schiff. Each has written an essay on a single outstanding sketchbook relating to his particular field of expertise. A foreword by Claude Picasso, the artist's son, and a reminiscence by Françoise Gilot, Claude's mother, provide a more personal understanding of the part the sketchbooks played in Picasso's life. In this book's first section, the six sketchbooks that relate to the essays are reproduced in full and in sequence, exactly as Picasso created them. The images in the second section have been taken from thirty of the finest sketchbooks. The final section is a catalogue raisonné, which fully describes all 175 extant sketchbooks and features one image from each.

But only in 1972, when Chinese archaeologists unearthed a cache of manuscripts in a second~ century B.C. tomb in Shantung province, did scholars have the evidence necessary to extend the boundaries of the text beyond the traditional thirteen~chapter version. In the Silver Sparrow Mountain (Yin ch'üeh~shan) dig, in addition to uncovering a partial copy of the thirteen~chapter text dating over a thousand years earlier than previously available manuscripts, scholars found five hitherto unknown chapters. Now Roger T. Ames, one of the leading contemporary interpreters of Chinese philosophy and culture, offers the first English translation of this classic to take full advantage of the newly discovered materials. In addition to an entirely new translation of the thirteen~chapter classic informed by these early documents, Ames has provided a translation of the five new chapters found with the Silver Sparrow Mountain texts. He has also incorporated extensive passages which for centuries had been attributed to Sun~tzu but which can only now be properly included in The Art of Warfare because of their similarity to the five new chapters. In all, Professor Ames's new edition of The Art of Warfare contains more than fifty percent new material. Fluid, crisp, and rigorously faithful to the original, the Ames translation is destined to stand as the definitive version of this cornerstone work of Classical Chinese. Ames prefaces his translation with an introduction describing the dramatic discovery of the new texts and the painstaking work of Chinese scholars to clean, sort, assemble, and date them. He also includes a critical Chinese text of the entire new version. Ames's close comparison between the traditional and the new texts leads him to conclude that The Art of Warfare is a composite work that evolved over the years, with the five "outer chapters" being representative of a large body of materials added to explain and elaborate upon points in the core text. The Ames translation and introduction to the complete Sun~tzu: The Art of Warfare is of compelling importance not only to students of Chinese history and literature, but to all readers interested in the art or the philosophy of war.

On sighting the Eternal City he fell to the ground and began murmuring cryptic Latin phrases, each signifying the future destiny of the Popes. For four hundred years the manuscript was locked in the labyrinth of the Vatican. On its rediscovery in 1595 it was rejected by the Church authorities as fraudulent but the content of the prophecies remains remarkably and chillingly accurate: to this day 90 per cent have come true. In examining the context of St Malachy's life, his pilgrimages and his miracles John Hogue presents a fascinating account of the fates of the Popes and eight hundred years of Catholic prophecy; including those of contemporaries, St Hildegard von Bingen, Joachim de Fiore and Nostradamus, whose vision of the papal succession closely resembles that of St. Malachy. In this first complete study of the prophecies in almost a hundred years, Hogue brings his expertise to new revelations regarding the authenticity of the mottoes. As the Roman Catholic Church continues to witness an eclipse in papal power this masterly work uncovers the truth about St Malachy's prophecies and reveals their significance as an account of the papal progression which Vatican policy makers have found too threatening to acknowledge.

Whatever was going on in the name of religion before he appeared, stopped forever. He brought truth to such simplicity, to such felicity, to such grace. He spoke the way an enlightened person speaks; he spoke through his being. He was not a scholar, and he was not worried about speculation. He has no abstract ideas; he was very down~to~earth. Buddha transformed the very quality of religion. lt was theology before him; after him it became anthropology. God was dethroned, man was throned. God is not a relevant word with Buddha; man is. He says all that is needed is hidden inside human consciousness. Man has not to look up to the heavens, he has not to ask for any grace from anywhere~he has to become a light unto himself." I had manv questions to ask, many doubts to resolve, many reservations to overcome; but, having listened to Bhagwan's incomparable discourses, all uncertainties have vanished. It is early morning in Poona; the sky is clear blue and the air cool and fresh before the warmth of the coming day. Through the busy crowds of this Indian city come a remarkable cross~section of the people of our planet: they are of every nationality, colour and creed. and they are corning to sit at his feet and listen to his morning discourse. Their time here is infinitely precious, something to be remembered and treasured for the rest of their lives: for all of them Bhagwan is the end of the rainbow. In a silence broken only by bird song, with the sunshine filtering through the leaves, those who have come to listen to Bhagwan sit quietly and wait. A deep hush settles and the effect is truly magical. finally, the Master himself appears, simply dressed in a white robe. My inital impression was of a man in the prime of life, a gentle and compassionate human being, perfectly balanced. A man of complete integrity. Every morning Bhagwan speaks without a script. He is without question, the most inspired, the most literate and the most profoundly informed speaker I have ever heard anywhere. Everything in his philosophy of life had the unmistakable ring of truth: a new experience. At the end of that first discourse, after Bhagwan had risen and moved quietly out, the thought, impossible to deny, rose into my mind: this is now it was in Galilee. In a world where so many are disillsioned with every kind of political system, where so many churches are empty and bitterly divided against each other here is a livng Master with a message of unity for us all. Bhagwan speaks, very movingly, of reaching, at the highest level of human existence, something which is "a fragrance and a benediction": to those who make the pilgrimage to India to see and hear him, he is himself that fragrance and that benediction. ~ Jean Lyell: "Who Is Bhagwan?" in "Vogue".

Meticulously researched and fully documented, Who Really Killed Kennedy? is the definitive source for those who, after five decades, wish to truly understand how and why John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated~including information that has largely been hidden from the American people since the 1950s. In this ultimate guide to the JFK assassination, readers will learn about: the ballistic evidence that proves there was more than one shooter the rarely studied final few frames of the Zapruder film that prove the wound in the back of JFK's head was an exit wound the eyewitnesses who saw Oswald in the second floor lunchroom when Dallas police rushed in the building the two previous attempts to assassinate JFK in November 1953 how Lee Harvey Oswald had extensive ties to the CIA and the KGB, and about his sordid relationship with his murderer, Jack Ruby how JFK was aware specific plans were being made to assassinate him how JFK double~crossed Richard Nixon and the CIA to win the election of 1950 the tape~recorded confessions Mafia godfathers made detailing their involvement in financing and planning the JFK assassination how JFK lost control of the CIA when he decided to pull the US military out of Vietnam, where top CIA operatives were engaged in drug trafficking how JFK and Life magazine threatened to derail LBJ's political career. At the height of his presidential popularity, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was gunned down while riding in a Dallas motorcade, a singular tragedy widely regarded as the end of America's post~war "age of innocence." At the time, a concerted effort was made by the Warren Commission, appointed by the Lyndon Johnson White House, to officially and for all time lay the entire blame on "lone gunman" Lee Harvey Oswald. Now, fifty years later, recently declassified documents shed new light on what really happened, both leading up to and on the fateful day of November 22, 1953. Who Really Killed Kennedy? is the culmination of decades of meticulous research. Investigative journalist and No. 1 New York Times bestselling author Jerome Corsi has sorted through the mountains of evidence~the hundreds of books, the tens of thousands of documents [including all twenty~six volumes of the Warren Commission's report], several films, and countless photographs. Dissecting the Warren Commission's conclusion that Oswald acted alone, he carefully and convincingly separates the unlikely from the real, and the speculation from the facts. Having personally known or met many of the key players in the JFK assassination drama, including a former top Soviet bloc intelligence official, Corsi reveals shocking information for the first time ever. Jerome Corsi sets a new standard for JFK assassination research, demanding that future researchers understand the deep, and unfortunately sinister, political forces that led up to an unthinkable event that marked a profound change in America, and the world.

Some ridicule the very idea, but in this book a fascinating portrayal is uncovered. Are such words as Illuminism or The Illuminati new to you? That is not strange, for today these expressions are unknown to millions, even among many well educated people. This results from the plan to keep that giant Conspiracy under cover, to always remain secret. "The great strength of our order lies in its concealment," declared Adam Weishaupt, founder of the new order in 1776. "Let it never appear in any place in its own name, but always covered by another name and another occupation." (Quoted in Robison's Proofs of a Conspiracy, p. 195.) This world~wide cover~up has been so cleverly conducted through the centuries, even millenniums, that most folk are entirely unaware of its existence. This Conspiracy goes back to the time of Nimrod, that evil genius who began that ancient apostasy in Mesopotamia. While Every Sunday School teacher knows something about the Tower of Babel, yet few realize that the principles and philosophies of that ancient movement are right now playing a tremendous role in both our political and religious life. The Illuminati 666 brings together many startling, almost unbelievable facts.

These men~Adolph Zukor, Carl Laemmle, Louis B. Mayer, the Warner brothers, Harry Cohn~created an image of America out of their own idealism, a vision that proved so powerful that it ultimately came to shape the myths, values, traditions, and archetypes of America itself. This spellbinding social history of Hollywood reaches beyond the commonplace stereotypes to examine the psychology of the movie moguls, and the political, religious, and economic milieu of the town and industry they built. For these men, prevented from entering the real corridors of gentility and power in America, cut their lives to the pattern of American respectability as they interpreted it. In the process they created a new country, an "empire of their own," and colonized the American imagination to such an extent that this country came to be largely defined by its movies. In prose as vivid as Tinseltown itself, Neal Gabler paints a mesmerizing portrait of the human face of Hollywood. Richly entertaining, dramatic, and impeccably researched, An Empire of Their Own is, finally, the powerful story of the men who gave us America and wound up losing themselves.

Why did trench tea taste of vegetables? What were 'iron rations'? Why was 'Maconochie' the most despised food on the front? The old adage that 'an army marches on its stomach' was never more true than on the Western Front during the First World War. Literally millions of hungry soldiers had to be fed and watered in trenches and behind the lines in France and Belgium and beyond. An army of cooks working in field kitchens relied on their training and official manuals published by the War Office and the Red Cross. This book reproduces pages direct from these rare artifacts with an authoritative introduction. [scarce item].

He is also handicapped in the difficult task of assessing the significance of his finds by the scarcity of reliable data in the literature of the ancient world. The wealth and history of ancient Southern Arabia was closely associated with trade. Rich merchandise, brought by sea from Africa, India and the Far East, was landed at Aden and Qana, and then, together with Arabian frankincense and myrrh, taken northward through Arabia by camel caravan to the countries bordering the Mediterranean, such as Egypt and Rome. The most important part in pre~Islamic Arabian history was played by the kingdoms of Southern Arabia, Main, Saba (the kingdom of the Biblical Queen of Sheba), Qataban and Himyar. Though they were constantly at war, each winning ascendancy in turn, trade continued without interruption. The states and tribes along the caravan routes grew wealthy and, by encouraging trade, became the middlemen in a great commercial industry which attracted the attention of civilizations from the Euphrates to the Nile. Cultural influences, passing down the trade routes, resulted in the growth of fine cities and temples and the development of vast irrigation works for the cultivation of incense trees and spices. Thus Southern Arabia formed an important link between East and West in the ancient world. For almost twenty years Brian Doe has lived in Aden, first as a Government Architect and later as Director of the Department of Antiquities. In this capacity he has made many expeditions and conducted extensive research into the archaeology of Southern Arabia. Supported by his own photographs, surveys and discoveries, Mr. Doe presents an integrated study of this mysterious land~its culture, trade, art and architecture~ranging from earliest historical times to the rise of Islam in the seventh century A.D.

Herodotus, while distinguishing his history from epic poetry and acknowledging that he was more bound by the necessity of covering actual great events truly, nonetheless drew upon folklore and myth. In fact, this oral tradition constituted for him almost overwhelmingly the imaginative record of the past. It is this aspect of Herodotus that has until recently proved problematic for contemporary historians. It is also the source of his great charm. His is the history of the storyteller, combining through his own narration the skeletal "historical" facts and the imaginative reality toward which his story reaches. By investigating and judging what he has seen, heard, and read, he seeks out the true causes and consequences of the great deeds of the past. In his History, the war between the Greeks and Persians, the origins of their enmity, and all the more general features of the civilizations of the world of his day are seen as a unity and expressed as the vision of one man who as a child lived through the last of the great acts in this universal drama. His personality, formalized as witness, reader, and commentator, is integrated into the report, which extends the drama of the past to future times. David Grene, one of the best known translators of the Greek classics, captures for the first time the personality of the writer, the character of the historian who mediates between myth and fact. As no other translator has done so successfully, he retains the paradoxes of Herodotus' prose: it is both literary and colloquial, artificial and accessible, with a certain blend of simplicity of phrase and complexity of effect. From Grene's translation and commentary, Herodotus finally emerges, the first historian ~ a man confronting the basic questions of history for, in our Western tradition, the first time.

Thirteen years before the Mayflower made landfall at Plymouth Rock, another voyage brought a different sort of settler to America's shores: not the familiar Pilgrims of the schoolbooks, aiming to build their "City on a Hill" around the one true Puritan faith, but a company organized by Bartholomew Gosnold, who died just weeks after arriving, leaving John Smith to chart the colony's course and claim most of the glory. This eye~opening book reveals the hidden history of their community at Jamestown~the first English~speaking settlement in the New World, where Gosnold's remains are thought to have been found in 2003~and traces its legacy through to the present day. The Secret Founding of America introduces two groups of founders~the Planting Fathers, who established the earliest settlements along essentially Christian lines, and the Founding Fathers, who unified the colonies with the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution~and argues that the new nation, conceived in liberty, was the Freemasons' first step toward a New World Order. Drawing on original findings and an in~depth understanding of the political and philosophical realities of the time, historian Nicholas Hagger charts the connections between Gosnold and Smith, Templars and Jacobites, and secret societies and libertarian ideals; explains how the influence of the German Illuminati worked on the framers of the new republic, including Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Thomas Paine; and shows the hand of Freemasonry at work at every turning point in America's history, from the Civil War, through the Cold War, to today's global struggles for democracy. Carefully researched and compellingly reasoned, The Secret Founding of America brings new insight to bear on four centuries of historyand casts the contours of the American dream in a radical new light.
