"The only cookbook that explains how to creat authentic French dishes in American kitchens with American foods". bavarian cream. rum baba. anchovy quiche. apple charlotte. canapes. banana tart. beurre maitre d'hotel. cherry flan. pate a choux. foie gras. ~ "Anyone can cook in the French manner anywhere," say Mesdames Beck, Bertholle, and Child, "with the right instruction." Here, at last, is the first fundamental cookbook that tells Americans how. Mastering the Art of French Cooking is for both seasoned cooks and beginners who love good food and long to reproduce at home the savory delights of the classic cuisine, from the historic Gallic masterpieces to the seemingly artless perfection of a dish of spring~green peas. This beautiful book, with over 100 instructive illustrations, is revolutionary in its approach because: 1) It leads the cook infallibly from the buying and handling of raw ingredients, through each essential step of a recipe, to the final creation of a delicate confection. 2) It breaks down the classic cuisine into a logical sequence of themes and variations rather than presenting an endless and diffuse catalogue of recipes; the focus is on key recipes which form the backbone of French cookery and which lend themselves to an infinite number of elaborations, bound to increase anyone's culinary repertoire. 3) It adapts classical techniques, wherever possible, to modern American conveniences. 4) It shows Americans how to buy products from any supermarket in the U.S.A. which reproduce the exact taste and texture of the French ingredients: equivalent meat cuts, for example; the right beans for a cassoulet ; or the appropriate fish and sea food for a bouillabaisse. 5) It offers suggestions for just the right accompaniment to each dish, including proper wines. Since there has never been a book as instructive and as workable as Mastering the Art of French Cooking, the techniques learned here can be applied to recipes in all the other French cookbooks, making them infinitely more usable. In compiling the secrets of famous cordons bleus, the authors have produced a magnificent volume that is sure to find the place of honor in every kitchen in America. Seller Inventory # 10181901

Since Kerouac's days on the road, Dwight Goddard's broadly inclusive selection of Mahayana, Pali, and Tibetan texts has offered generations of American readers an accessible introduction to the practice of Zen that has flowered in this country. This anthology is one of the building blocks of Buddhist practice in the West. In this edition, a new foreword by the distinguished Buddhist teacher and writer Robert Aitken reintroduces Goddard's classic, highlights the book's continuing contributions to Zen Buddhism in America, and offers new revelations about Dwight Goddard, the enigmatic compiler of A Buddhist Bible. "A full and comprehensive selection of some of the great scriptures of Buddhism and the world . To Mr. Goddard, it was evidently a labor of love. It seems to this reviewer to contain the essence of Buddhism . Dwight Goddard has rendered here a great service, not only to students of religion but to the general reader who would have some idea of the essential teachings of Buddhism:' ~New York Times ~Dwight Goddard (1861~1939) wrote numerous booklets and pamphlets about Buddhism, in addition to A Buddhist Bible. Recent years have brought Jack Kerouac into the forefront of postwar American literature, and perhaps no other writer's work has experienced the renaissance that Kerouac's has. Drawing upon original interviews, his own relationship with Kerouac, Kerouac's recently published letters, and still~unpublished journals from the Kerouac archives, Ellis Amburn reveals an inner Kerouac that has not appeared in any previous biography. This is the "subterranean" Kerouac whom Amburn, the editor of his last two novels, knew personally, having witnessed the legendary Beat writer's decline into alcoholic despair during the last few years of his life. While earlier works have focused primarily on literary criticism or the day~to~day dross of Kerouac's life, Amburn allows the reader to gaze into the writer's psyche and gain a richer understanding of the man than was previously possible. The Kerouac who emerges in Amburn's sensitive and nuanced portrait is a man torn by his conflicting desires and beliefs. Jack Kerouac exposed many of these conflicts in his conversations with Amburn. As the two worked on Kerouac's largely autobiographical manuscripts, the writer supplied the editor, in letters and on the phone, with details that never made it into his published novels. These were the most painfully intimate details that Kemuac feared would damage his reputation in a sexually conservative era. Tormented by his own conscience, he poured his passion into his writing until his lifestyle finally caused his death from liver damage. Perhaps the greatest of Kerouac's conflicts centered around his sexual relationships with men. Amburn recounts what Kerouac himself told him about these experiences, which other biographers have never before reported, and sheds new light on their profound impact on the man who remained convinced until his death that he was not bisexual, and that homosexuality was in fact immoral. Deeply insightful, refreshing, and certainly controversial, Subterranean Kerouac is a necessary book for any Kerouac fan or scholar. Seller Inventory # 10151901

The corruption that plagues American politics is traced to an alliance with elites and extremists loyal to the Land of Israel. Unable to rid politics of campaign finance corruption, the U.S. finds its security imperiled by those skilled at deceiving America into waging wars for the Zionist state. Tracing this corruption to criminal syndicates from the 1920s, Guilt by Association reveals how those skilled at displacing facts with beliefs wield clout from the shadows. Both deception and self~deceit play critical roles in enabling this criminality to expand its reach on a global scale. Guilt by Association documents how ~ by operating in the realms of politics, media, academia, think tanks and popular culture ~ corruption came to dominate politics, as shown by presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama. Chronicling systemic corruption that predates these candidates by decades, the book explains how organized crime expanded worldwide while the U.S. discredited itself in the eyes of a global public astounded that Americans would tolerate such corruption to their own detriment. Featuring sophisticated analysis presented in layman's language, Guilt by Association will transform political debate in the U.S. and beyond. Author, educator, attorney and adviser on financial policy to thirty~five countries, Jeff Gates served seven years as counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance (1980~87). "Guilt by Association is a magnificent, timely and persuasive study of how stealth, deceit and cunning helped create today's perilous situation in the Middle East". Seller Inventory # 10151903

Chancellor for just four weeks, facing a tight new election, and with a tenuous grasp on power, Adolf Hitler immediately pointed the finger of blame at the Communists. Only a quick and decisive response could save the country from chaos, he warned. Following his lead, his cabinet and the Reich President swiftly approved a decree effectively canceling the rule of law in the Weimer Republic and solidifying Nazi power. Five thousand people were summarily arrested and imprisoned. Repeatedly renewed and remaining in force until 1945, the "Reichstag Fire Decree" was the legal basis for the brutal dictatorship that lasted for twelve years, marking the true beginning of the Third Reich. The controversy surrounding the fire's origins, however, has endured for eighty ~ from the original investigation, to the Nuremberg Trials, through postwar de~Nazification and renewed war crimes trials, and up to the present moment. At the scene of the fire the police arrested 23~year~old Marinus van der Lubbe, a nearly blind, possibly mentally handicapped Dutch Communist stonemason who was quickly indicted, tried, and beheaded. Though forensic experts who examined the fire established that van der Lubbe could not have acted alone, the case against the Communists tried with him collapsed and no one else was ever indicted or brought to trial. Van der Lubbe was initially dismissed abroad as the tool of a Nazi conspiracy. However, since the 1960s the historical consensus has been that he acted independently. Burning the Reichstag reopens the case, providing vivid portraits of key figures in the fire and its aftermath. including Rudolf Diels, the head of the Prussian Political Police and Hermann Goring protege whose detectives initially investigated the fire; Goring himself, founder of the Gestapo and future Reichsmarschall; and Joseph Goebbels. the Nazi Propaganda Minister. Making use of fresh eyes and a number of new sources and archives. Hett's landmark study of the Reichstag fire challenges the orthodoxy and in the process places the fire in a wider context, revealing how, and why, it has remained one of the last mysteries of the Nazi period and one of the most controversial and contested events in the twentieth century. It describes Hitler and Stalin's strange, calculating, and miscalculating relationship before the German invasion of Soviet Russia, with its gigantic (and unintended) consequences. John Lukacs questions many long~held beliefs. He suggests, for example, that among other things Hitler's first purpose involved England: if Stalin's Communist Russia were to be defeated, Hitler's Third Reich would be well~nigh invincible, and the British and American peoples would be forced to rethink the war against Hitler. The book offers penetrating insights and a new portrait of Hitler and Stalin, moved by their longlasting inclinations. Yet among other things, Lukacs presents evidence that Hitler (rather than his generals) had moments of dark foreboding before the invasion. Stalin could not, because he wished not, believe that Hitler would choose the risk of a twofront war by attacking him; he was stunned and shocked and came close to a breakdown. But he recovered, grew into a statesman, and eventually became a prime victor of the Second World War. Such are the ironies of history; John Lukacs paints them with a shining narrative skill. John Lukacs is one of America's most respected historians and the author of more than two dozen books on history, nine of which are published by Yale University Press. Seller Inventory # 10141902

FDR transformed an isolated and isolationist country into the most formidable superpower the world has ever known. He was both the savior of American capitalism, in peril from its own excesses and the competing systems of Communism and Fascism, and the foremost reformer in the nation's history. And it was Roosevelt's bravery and remarkable leadership skills that brought America into the world's conflicts at mid~century as, in Winston Churchill's words, "the greatest champion of freedom who has ever brought help and comfort from the New World to the Old." It is Black's contention that the second half of the twentieth century was so much more successful than the first because Roosevelt permanently engaged America and Europe in the Far East. How could this man, whose political life nearly ended with an illness at age thirty~nine, have accomplished so much as a politician, war leader, strategist, and global visionary? The sheer scope of FDR's life and achievements has deterred many historians and biogaphers from attempting a comprehensive biography. Additionally, FDR's remarkable personality was terribly difficult to decode ~ leading famously to comparisons with the similarly unmovable, and unknowable, Sphinx. Conrad Black has risen to the challenge. He is masterly on the public and wise on the private Roosevelt, telling us how this privileged, seemingly facile young man became the vigorous young president and then the redoubtable older president. Roosevelt was underestimated as a young man and, as Black makes clear, continues, incredibly, to be underestimated, particularly by the propagators of the Yalta myth, according to which Roosevelt was swindled by Stalin. This book demonstrates that Roosevelt's dealings with Stalin were far more successful than the myth would have it. FDR's life was distinguished by the variety and totality of his achievements. Here that life is revealed in a work that is as comprehensive, ambitious, and surprising as the man it describes. Seller Inventory # 10141901

Saltykov~Shchedrin (1826~1889) belongs to those great Russian writers who are least known abroad. He was in the main a satirist and a pamphleteer, and books written in these two genres are always completely immersed in the curent political and social affairs of the country concerned, requiring the reader to have a sound knowledge of the national soil from which they have sprung and the life of the day. Shchedrin, moreover, uses a metaphorical language, which, abounding in implications and understatements, can be fully understood only in the original. However, among Shchedrin's works there are quite a few that can be appreciated perfectly by modern readers, foreigners too, as they demand no special knowledge of the background and the epoch. First and foremost among these books is the family chronicle The Golovlyovs. Reading Shchedrin's masterpieces will introduce the reader to literary works of lasting value, drawing him into the sphere of the writer's profound reflections and opening before him "endless galleries for thought"to use the expression of a contemporary of Saltykov~Shchedrin. The introduction has been written by Professor Sergei Makashin, a wellknown scholar of Saltykov~Shchedrin's work. Seller Inventory # 10121904

And few, if any, can resist following such advice once they have tasted the delicious food of the Pennsylvania Dutch, such as sauerkraut und speck (sauerkraut and pork), smearcase (cottage cheese) and schnitz und knepp (dried apples and dumplings). Prior to 1935, most of the recipes for Pennsylvania Dutch cookery had been passed from generation to generation from mother to daughter, by word of mouth. Realizing the need for recipes in written form, J. George Frederick decided to compile a cookbook entitled PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH COOKERY that would "keep Pennsylvania Dutch cookery from falling into oblivion." He also wanted to tell the "fully rounded story of the Pennsylvania Dutch." So, in addition to numerous recipes and anecdotes about Dutch food, Frederick also included in his book a section about the history of the Pennsylvania Dutch, their arts and crafts and their contributions to this country. The Pennsylvania Dutch came to this country before 1700. The term "Pennsylvania Dutch" is a colloquialism for Pennsylvania German. These people brought with them the very best of German cooking and then adjusted it to the foods and conditions they found in America. The Pennsylvania Dutch are a thrifty people and their cookery reflects their way of life. Many dishes common in today's Dutch cookery were created when a housewife (hausfrau) felt that she could use, rather thatn discard, leftovers. ~The food of the Pennsylvania Dutch is abundant and hearty. The art of traditional cooking has been passed from generation to generation. It is only with PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH COOKERY that many of these recipes became standardized and written down for others across America and the world to enjoy. PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH COOKERY is truly a collector's book, for not only does it contain many authentic and unique recipes, but a history of the Pennsylvania Dutch people themselves. This book is sure to bring you many delightful hours. Seller Inventory # 10121903

A groundbreaking history that will no doubt contribute to a reappraisal of some deep~rooted founding myths." ~Kirkus Reviews (STARRED REVIEW). In Ebony and Ivy, historian Craig Steven Wilder delivers a groundbreaking and incendiary exploration of the intertwined histories of slavery, race, and higher education in America. Meticulously researched and passionately written, this work makes clear just how deeply the evil of slavery sank its tentacles into every cranny of American society and culture. Academia was no exception. Many of America's revered colleges and universities~from Harvard, Yale, and Princeton to Rutgers, Williams, and the University of North Carolina~were drenched in the sweat, the tears, and sometimes the blood of people of color. The earliest academies, proclaiming their mission to Christianize the "savages" of North America, played a key role in European conquest. Schools such as Dartmouth and William & Mary, which touted their efforts with Indian students, accelerated the destruction of Native nations. The slave economy and higher education grew up together, each nurturing the other. Money from the purchase and sale of human beings built the campuses, stocked the libraries, and swelled the endowments of American colleges. Slaves waited on faculty and students; academic leaders eagerly courted the support of slaveholders and slave traders. Ultimately, as Wilder shows, our leading universities were thoroughly dependent on enslavement and became breeding grounds for the racist ideas that sustained it. In short, the American academy never stood apart from American slavery~it stood beside church and state as the third pillar of a civilization built on bondage. Ebony and Ivy is a powerful and propulsive study, revealing a history of oppression behind the institutions usually considered the cradle of enlightened politics. "With deep and imaginative research, Craig Wilder persuasively shows that all early American universities~North and South~were involved with the institution of slavery. Slavery infected every aspect of American life, and universities were never removed from the contagion. Like banks or insurance companies, southern plantations or northern textile plants, they profited at the expense of the enslaved. Seller Inventory # 10121902

The truth is more interesting. The Irish, as Carmel McCaffrey and Leo Eaton show in In Search of Ancient Ireland, are not even Celtic in an archaeological sense. And there were plenty of bishops in Ireland before a British missionary called Patrick arrived. Most of what we think of as Irish is a product of the nineteenth century. Many times in the past five thousand years Ireland has stood at the heart of European culture. In the middle of the eighth century B.C. it may have been the wealthiest place in Europe. Ms. McCaffrey and Mr. Eaton trace the history, archaeology, and legends of ancient Ireland from 9000 B.C., when nomadic hunter~gatherers appeared in Ireland at the end of the last Ice Age~to 1167 A.D., when a Norman invasion brought the country under control of the English crown for the first time. The authors visited monasteries and ring forts, climbed mountains and delved deep into sacred caves, and were accompanied on this journey through the historical landscape by many of Ireland's best~known scholars, historians, archaeologists, poets, and storytellers. Ireland's ancient past is still filled with many mysteries. But because of a cascade of new archaeological discoveries and new techniques for interpreting them, the truth about this past is coming into sharper focus. This book is replete with new information, some of it at odds with what many Irish descendants believe about their ancestral home. In Search of Ancient Ireland is not simply the story of events from long ago. Across Ireland today are festivals, places, and folk customs that provide a tangible connection to events thousands of years past. They too are part of the book's link to the past. In Search of Ancient Ireland is the official companion to the three~part PBS documentary series. Seller Inventory # 10121901

Haig, whose army suffered 60,000 casualties on the first day of the Battle of the Somme in 1916, was still in command after five months more fighting and another 400,000 casualties. By the war's end the numbers of dead ran into millions ~ doggedly brave British Empire soldiers who, Laffin believes, were killed, wounded or broken by commanders who were vain, egocentric and incompetent. But the generals, who blamed the dead and junior in rank, cannot be excused on the grounds that there was "nothing else that they could do". Even now, more than 75 years after that "Great War for Civilization", this book raises questions that are uncomfortable. Laffin draws on the memories and writings of those who took part and quotes the judgements of other military historians to provide an analysis of just what went wrong in the generals' leadership, and how it resulted in such appalling and tragic losses ~ and concludes that they were not merely incompetent but uncaring. ROCKEFELLER, SR.~history's first billionaire and the patriarch of America's most famous dynasty~is an icon whose true nature has eluded three generations of historians. Now Ron Chernow, the National Book Award~winning biographer of the Morgan and Warburg banking families, gives us a history of the mogul "etched with uncommon objectivity and literary grace . as detailed, balanced, and psychologically insightful a portrait of the tycoon as we may ever have" (Kirkus Reviews). Titan is the first full~length biography based on unrestricted access to Rockefeller's exceptionally rich trove of papers. A landmark publication full of startling revelations, the book will indelibly alter our image of this most enigmatic capitalist. Born the son of a flamboyant, bigamous snake~oil salesman and a pious, straitlaced mother, Rockefeller rose from rustic origins to become the world's richest man by creating America's most powerful and feared monopoly, Standard Oil. Branded "the Octopus" by legions of muckrakers, the trust refined and marketed nearly 90 percent of the oil produced in America. Rockefeller was likely the most controversial businessman in our nation's history. Critics charged that his empire was built on unscrupulous tactics: grand~ scale collusion with the railroads, predatory pricing, industrial espionage, and wholesale bribery of political officials. The titan spent more than thirty years dodging investigations until Teddy Roosevelt and his trustbusters embarked on a marathon crusade to bring Standard Oil to bay. While providing abundant new evidence of Rockefeller's misdeeds, Chernow discards the stereotype of the cold~blooded monster to sketch an unforgettably human portrait of a quirky, eccentric original. A devout Baptist and temperance advocate, Rockefeller gave money more generously~his chosen philanthropies included the Rockefeller Foundation, the University of Chicago, and what is today Rockefeller University~ than anyone before him. Titan presents a finely nuanced portrait of a fascinating, complex man, synthesizing his public and private lives and disclosing numerous family scandals, tragedies, and misfortunes that have never before come to light. John D. Rockefeller's story captures a pivotal moment in American history, documenting the dramatic post~Civil War shift from small business to the rise of giant corporations that irrevocably transformed the nation. With cameos by Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst, Jay Gould, William Vanderbilt, Ida Tarbell, Andrew Carnegie, Carl .Iung, J. Pierpont Morgan., William James, Henry Clay Frick, Mark Twain, and Will Rogers, Titan turns Rockefeller's life into a vivid tapestry of American society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is Ron Chernow's signal triumph that he narrates this monumental saga with all the sweep, drama, and insight that this giant subject deserves. Seller Inventory # 10111902

His book has become one . " It has remained exactly that for over 80 years~a superb documentary on the life and culture of the American Indian, encompassing every facet of this complex and fascinating subject. He was a member of a board to perfect a system of army~regulations in New York City in 1871 and 1872. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1873, from that time on he was engaged in the campaigns against the hostile Indians of the West. He was appointed Colonel of the 11th Infantry in 1882, a position he held until his death in 1895. In 1925, Fawcett ventured into the Amazon to find an ancient civilization, vowing to make one of the most important archaeological discoveries in history. For centuries Europeans believed the world's largest jungle concealed the glittering kingdom of El Dorado. Thousands died looking for it. Over time many scientists came to view the Amazon as a deathtrap that could never support a complex society, But Fawcett, whose daring expeditions helped inspire Conan Doyle's The Lost World, had spent years building his scientific case. Captivating the imagination of millions around the globe, Fawcett embarked with his twenty~one~year~old son, determined to prove that this ancient civilization~which he dubbed "Z" existed. Then he and his expedition vanished. Fawcett's fate~and the tantalizing clues he left behind about "Z"~became an obsession for hundreds who followed him into the uncharted wilderness. For decades scientists and adventurers have searched for evidence of Fawcett's party and the lost City of Z. Countless have perished, been captured by tribes, or gone mad. As David Grann delved ever deeper into the mystery surrounding Fawcett's quest and the greater mystery of what lies within the Amazon, he found himself, like the generations who preceded him, drawn into the jungle's "green hell." His quest for the truth, and his stunning discoveries about Fawcett's fate and "Z," form the heart of this enthralling narrative. Seller Inventory # 10101902

They were branded as "asocials," persecuted, and eventually herded into concentration camps where many thousands were killed. But until now the story of their persecution by the Nazis has either been distorted or overlooked. In The Nazi Persecution of the Gypsies, Guenter Lewy draws upon thousands of documents~many never before used~from German and Austrian archives to create the most comprehensive and accurate picture available of the fate of the Gypsies under the Nazi regime. Lewy traces the escalating vilification of the Gypsies as the Nazis instigated a widespread crackdown on the "work~shy" and "itinerants." But he shows that Nazi policy towards Gypsies was confused and changeable. At first, local officials persecuted Gypsies, and those who behaved in gypsy~like fashion, for antisocial tendencies. Later, with the rise of race obsession, Gypsies were seen as a threat to German racial purity, though Himmler himself wavered, trying to separate out and save those he considered "pure Gypsies" descended from Aryan roots in India. Indeed, Lewy challenges much existing scholarship in showing that, however much the Gypsies were persecuted, there was no general program of extermination analogous to the "final solution" for the Jews. Exploring in heart~rending detail the fates of individual Gypsies and their families, The Nazi Persecution of the Gypsies is an important contribution to our understanding of both the history of this mysterious people and all facets of the Nazi terror. Since his assassination in 1965, a great deal has been written to celebrate his life and to speculate about the forces that converged to end it, but this is the first comprehensive, accurate account of Malcolm Little's evolution from youthful waywardness to greatness. Based largely on interviews conducted over two decades with more than four hundred of the people who knew him ~ including Malcolm's mother, most of his brothers, his elementary and junior high school classmates, his teachers, his teenage partners in burglary, his prison~mates, and his devoted Muslim associates ~ this biography shows how deeply the political Malcolm was rooted not only in the society he inherited, but in the legacy bequeathed him by his family. Bruce Perry has also obtained access to school, police, prison, and F.B.I. records, as well as the State Department, C.I.A., and Secret Service files on Malcolm. The author shows us a man in conflict, whose journey is a microcosm of the racial discord that corrodes American life. We see him overcoming his childhood handicaps and transforming youthful weakness into political strength. We see him conquering his fears and moving his followers to conquer theirs, liberating himself inwardly by liberating his people politically. His personal struggle to overcome the ravages of his past while inspirng a generation with his pride, his courage, and his spellbinding presence is a riveting, deeply affecting story. The extent to which Bruce Perry has been able to reconstruct the events of Malcolm X's brief life is extraordmary, the perspective these facts cast on all of our lives today, black and white, poignantly illuminates the dark corners of the way we live now. Hunting Evil is the first complete and definitive account of how the Nazis escaped and were pursued and captured~or managed to live long lives as fugitives. At the end of the Second World War, an estimated thirty thousand Nazi war criminals fled from justice, including some of the highest~ranking members of the Nazi Party. Many of them have names that resonate deeply in twentieth~century history~Eichmann, Mengele, Martin Bormann, and Klaus Barbie~not just for the monstrosity of their crimes, but also because of the shadowy nature of their post~war existence, holed up in the depths of Latin America, always one step ahead of their pursuers. Aided and abetted by prominent people throughout Europe, they hid in foreboding castles high in the Austrian Alps and were taken in by shady Argentine secret agents. The attempts to bring them to justice are no less dramatic, featuring vengeful Holocaust survivors, inept politicians, and daring plots to kidnap or assassinate the fugitives. In this exhaustively researched and compellingly written work of World War II history and investigative reporting, journalist and novelist Guy Walters gives a comprehensive account of one of the most shocking and important aspects of the war: how the most notorious Nazi war criminals escaped justice; how they were pursued, captured, or able to remain free until their natural deaths; and how the Nazis were assisted while they were on the run by "helpers" ranging from a Vatican bishop to a British camel doctor, and even members of Western intelligence services. Based on all~new interviews with Nazi hunters and former Nazis and intelligence agents, travels along the actual escape routes, and archival research in Germany, Britain, the Unitea States, Austria, and Italy, Hunting Evil authoritatively debunks much of what has previously been understood about Nazis and Nazi hunters in the post~war era, including myths about the alleged "Spider" and "Odessa" escape networks and the surprising truth about the world's most legendary Nazi hunter, Simon Wiesenthal. From its haunting chronicle of the heinous mass murders the Nazis perpetrated and the murk" details of their post~war existence to the challenges of hunting them down, Hunting Evil is a monumental work of nonfiction written with the pacing and intrigue of a thriller. In essence, the conflict is the continuation of a long drawn out struggle between Saudi Arabia, which traditionally has sought to dominate the whole Arabian peninsula, and the littoral states~Qatar, the Trucial Shaikhdoms, and the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman~which wish to maintain their independence. This struggle has been focused for the past decade upon the strategically important Buraimi Oasis, which Saudi Arabia seized in 1952 and from which she was evicted in 1955 by the rulers of Muscat and Abu Dhabi, with British help. In the first half of this book Dr. Kelly traces the history of Saudi expansion ~in Eastern Arabia over the past century and a half, and the course of the various negotiations to determine the frontiers. In the second half he deals with events since World War II: the assertion of a sweeping frontier claim by Saudi Arabia in 1949, the Saudi occupation of the Buraimi Oasis from 1952 to 1955, the attempt to settle the frontier question by arbitration, and the reasons for its failure. He examines Saudi Arabia's arguments in support of her claim in detail, and assesses the relative merits of the opposing claims. Much of his work is based upon original research in the pertinent historical records. He has traveled in the region, and he has made use of material not previously accessible. It captures the spirit of the time through the correspondence of the teachers . a marvellous work of tapestry. "~Francois Furet, reviewing the French edition in Le Nouvel Observateur. The Alliance Israelite Universelle, an organization founded in Paris in 1860, established a vast network of schools in Sephardi and Eastern Jewish communities in Muslim lands stretching from Morocco in the west to Iran in the east. Teachers were recruited locally from among the best students at these schools, trained in Paris, and sent to teach in and direct other Alliance schools. In this book Aron Rodrigue examines the ideology and activities of the organization and discusses its place in modern Jewish history. His primary source is the correspondence between the teachers and the Alliance Central Committee in Paris. The book includes a generous selection of letters, along with reports, directives, and policy guidelines, thematically arranged and analyzed. The teachers not only discuss school matters but paint a distinctive picture of Jewish communities in Muslim lands, commenting on their social structures, customs, relationships with non~Jewish populations and authorities, and the changes caused by political, social, and economic developments. The image created within the representational framework of the letters is one that is often highly critical of the communities in which the teachers found themselves, reflecting the latter's identification with the values of French Jewry and the Alliance. Imbued with the liberal ideals of the age and guided by the Franco~Jewish ideology of emancipation, the Alliance sought to gain equal rights and full citizenship for Jews in every country, to defend Jews from persecution, and, through education, to modernize and westernize non~European Jewish communities. Its activities contributed greatly to the fundamental cultural, social, and political reorientation of Sephardi and Eastern Jewries toward the West in the modern period. The work of the Alliance was intimately associated with the process of westernization that marked so decisively the history of Jewish communities in the last century of their existence in Muslim lands. This book reveals and recovers the "voice" of the first radically westernizing group among the Jews of North Africa and the Middle East: the Alliance teachers. It presents their unique discourse, ideas, and mind~set, and illuminates the encounter of Middle Eastern and North African Jewries with the West. Images of Sephardi and Eastern Jewries in Transition is an expanded and revised version of Aron Rodrigue's De l'instruction a l'emancipation: Les enseignanss de l'Alliance Israelite Universelle et les Juifs d'Orient, 1860~1939. The secret of this struggle is kept by the Soviet regime even more zealously than that of the torments and annihilation it inflicted upon millions of its victims. More than anything else, the Communist regime fears the revelation of the fight which is conducted against it with a spiritual force unheard of and unknown to many countries in many periods of their history. The fighters' spiritual strength rises to the greatest height and to a supreme degree of tension when their situation is most helpless and the state system most ruthlessly destructive." ~from the Preface In this new and final volume of a towering work that is both literary masterpiece and living memorial to the untold millions of Soviet martyrs, Solzhenitsyn's epic narrative moves to its astounding and unforeseen climax. We now see that this great cathedral of a book not only commemorates those massed victims but celebrates the unquenched spirit of resistance which flickered and then burst into flame even in Stalin's "special camps." The special camps for political prisoners in the last years of Stalin's regime and in those of his heirs were run with a sadistic brutality identical with what we know of Buchenwald and Ravensbruck, There had always been individual escapes and attempted escapes from these camps, and there had been rebellions and strikes in several, but the disciplined, sustained resistance of Kengir, which is described here, involved more than a thousand men, who, in 1954, paralyzed their camp in the middle of Kazakhstan for forty days. The intoxication of their resistance lends an often joyous note to these pages. However, the exhilaration of heroism must give way to a somber threnody for the fifteen million peasants exterminated during the forced collectivization of farms and for entire nations, like the Volga Germans and Crimean Tatars, exiled to remote territories . where they remain. Solzhenitsyn also reviews for us the experience of internal exile for those, like himself, who had been released from the labor camps but not from surveillance. Of the Archipelago as a whole, Le Monde has said: "It is the epic of our times. An epic is always the creation of an entire people, written by the one person who has the creative power and the genius to become the spokesman for his nation. And in this work, we hear a people speaking through the impassioned, intrepid, ironic, furious, lyrical, brutal, and often tender voice of the narrator. ". Seller Inventory # 10071903

Summoned from the imagination by the same inspiration that fired the Old Testament texts, The Forgotten Books of Eden rise above the boundaries of tradition and time, bringing us their creators' spiritual vision. Reaching back to events in Genesis, for instance, "The Books of Adam and Eve" give us a vivid sequel to the biblical account of the expulsion from Paradise. "The Odes of Solomon" are some of the most beautiful songs of peace and joy that the world possesses. For vigor and insight, they are paralleled only in the most exalted parts of the Scriptures. These are expressions of the human spirit. Now, with their translation and compilation, we can read them and hear today those long~silent voices proclaim their ancient wisdom and faith. ~Suppressed by the early Church Fathers who compiled the Bible, these Apocryphal Books have for centuries remain.
