About this Item: Los Angeles: Nut Quad Press, 1994., 1994. 4-pages sewn in printed card paper wrappers as issued, enclosing a facsimile of "The Zamorano Club" Roster for 1934 which had belonged to original member Harry L. Dunn (small 8vo., original printed paper wrappers); the whole preserved in blue cloth folding box. Provenance: from the library of James S. Copley, presented to him by Dick Yale, his sale, Sotheby's New York "Magnificent American, Historical Documents", 10th May 2011, lot 1059. First edition, limited issue, one of 250 copies printed. "This was not the first Zamorano roster. That distinction belongs to a small publication issued by the club in 1929 which included a necessarily short history of the Zamorano club, together with its reason for being. The present facsimile, however, bears its own laurel. It is the first roster of the club to be only that; a listing of the membership as it was constituted sixty years ago". About this Item: Southampton: Colonel Sir Charles Close, 1926., 1926. Single sheet (24 6/8 x 23 4/8 inches). Fine folding chromolithographed map laid down on linen. Original pictorial printed paper covers to verso (a bit browned at folds). Provenance: with the blind library stamp of Henry Paul Busch of Philadelphia. Popular Edition, One-Inch Map, Sheet 145 (Devonshire). According to the imprint, first surveyed in 1858-89 and published in 1892. Revised in 1896-7 and in 1908-9, again in 1912-13, and printed in this format in 1919, with minor revisions in 1924-5, and reprinted as here in 1925 and 1926. Sir Charles Close was appointed director-general of the Ordnance Survey "on 18 August 1911. He found the organization rather out of touch with the scientific world . He proceeded with a second geodetic levelling of the United Kingdom, creating fundamental bench marks which have been of lasting value. He also established three mean-sea level tidal stations at Dunbar, Newlyn, and Felixstowe, of which the second remains in operation. Close also turned his attention to the cartography of the Ordnance Survey with the intention of revolutionizing the appearance of the one-inch map. His first attempt, the Killarney District map (1913), was crowned with success. For artistic achievement in colour printing it remains unsurpassed by the Ordnance Survey. But the processes involved were too expensive in post-war Britain, and a simpler model was adopted for the one-inch map. This new style lacked the coloured layers, hill-shading, and hachures of the Irish sheet, but, with a smaller contour interval and revised road classification system, it set the pattern for all subsequent one-inch series. In 1919, Close secured the appointment of a civilian archaeology officer, O. G. S. Crawford, resulting in a highly acclaimed series of historical maps of which the first was Roman Britain (1924).During the First World War the Ordnance Survey printed 32 million maps for the armies in France and elsewhere. Close, who had been promoted major (1901), lieutenant-colonel (1908), and colonel (1912), periodically visited the western front. After the war Close had the disagreeable task of implementing drastic cuts in the Ordnance Survey establishment which had been recommended by the Geddes committee. A direct result of this was that the large-scale plans fell massively into arrears by the 1930s" (J. De Graaff-Hunter, rev. Yolande Hodson for DNB). Seller Inventory # 72map325

About this Item: Ronaldson Publications, Oxford, 1994. 4to. xiipp., 125pp. Numerous b&w photographs in text throughout of Fred Covey. Original red calf; dust jacket illustrated with b&w pictures of Fred Covey on front and rear panels. First Edition. This book is a collection of reprints of actual newspaper articles chronicling Fred Covey's illustrious career edited by his grandson. From the foreword: "Fred Covey was the last of a trio of illustrious British champions of Real Tennis from "the golden age of tennis", the other being Peter Latham and "Punch" Fairs. Between them, they held the World Championship for all but one year in the period from 1895-1928 and the tenure of Covey, at fifteen years, was the longest. Fred Covey was World Champion for all but a year in the period 1912-1928.because he was flanked chronologically by the more flamboyant Peter Latham and the even more long-reigning Pierre Etchebaster, Covey's achievements are often underrated.". About this Item: Oxford: Richard Clements,1755., 1755. HUDDESFORD, George (1698/9 1776). A Proper Reply to a Pamphlet, entitled, A Defence of the Rector and Fellows of Exeter College, &c. Oxford: Printed at the Theatre for Richard Clements; and Sold by J. and J. Rivington in St. Paul's Church-Yard, London. 1755. 4to., (10 4/8 x 8 4/8 inches). 18-pages, stabbed and sewn as issued (last leaf torn with loss, old folds, pale stains). Woodcut head and tail-pieces. Original blank front wrapper. Provenance: with the early ownership inscription of Arthur Tremayne [?(1701-1796), Member of Parliament for Launceston 1727-1734] on the front cover. Francis Webber (1707-1771) was the author of "A Defence of the Rector,." and this is Vice-Chancellor Huddesford's response to the particular allegations that Huddersford, and therefore Oxford University, harboured feelings of disloyalty towards King George II. "Some few Days preceeding the fourteenth of February 1754, an Accusation was lodged before the Vice-Chancellor, by the Rector of Exeter College, attended by some of his Fellows, against a young Scholar, a little above two Years standing, for having entered their College about seven or eight of the Clock in the Evening, and having there cried out, more than once, "King James for 'ever' - The Vice-Chancellor immediately appointed the next Day, for hearing the Matter of the Accusation at his Lodgings, The Accused made no other Defence, than that He had not Intentionally offended; but that falling into Company with some Acquaintance, on the Day that was charged in the Complaint, He was unhappily so disordered in Liquor, as to be utterly uncapable of recollecting either This or any other Transaction that passed that Evening. This Account of his Intoxication was in some Measure allowed by the Porter himself; but more strongly confirmed by the Evidence of a Gentleman, who had no previous Acquaintance with the Delinquent, but, finding him in the Street in so very unbecoming a Condition, had out of Compassion led him home to his proper College" (pages 12 and 13). Arthur Tremayne is quite possibly the former MP for Launceston, who was of "an ancient royalist Cornish family, [who] inherited a very large fortune from his great-grandfather. A Tory and a friend of the Morices of Werrington, who probably returned him at Launceston, he voted against the Government in every recorded division. He did not stand again, and died at an advanced age in 1796" (The History of Parliament online). ESTC T42777. Catalogued by Kate Hunter. Seller Inventory # 72lib1314

About this Item: London: John Lane, the Bodley Head Limited, 1927., 1927. APPERLEY, Charles James, as "NIMROD" (1778 1843). The Chace, the Road and the Turf by Nimrod. A New Edition with an Introduction by W. Shaw Sparrow, London: John Lane, the Bodley Head Limited, 1927. 4to., (9 4/8 x 7 inches). Colour frontispiece, 7 colour plates, and 8 black and white. Contemporary green calf, gilt (unevenly faded to tan). First published in the Quarterley Review and then in book form in 1837. Apperley's "expert knowledge and social status made him an invaluable recruit to the sporting press of the time, and he may even be said to have created the role of gentleman hunting correspondent. Writing at first under various pseudonyms (Acastus, Eques, and A), he published his first article for the Sporting Magazine as Nimrod in January 1822 and he subsequently usually used that nom de plume. For five seasons, from 1824 to 1828, he was the magazine's official representative, with a contract that gave him £1500 p.a., a remarkably high salary designed to cover his travelling expenses and the upkeep of a string of hunters" (Norman Gash for DNB).
