Hardcover. Condition: Poor. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. The first 3 books are dated 1797 and the 4th book 1802. Peter Pindar was the pen-name of John Wolcot (1738-1819) a doctor from Truro who achieved some fame in the 1780s through his gift for comic verse, in particular, verse that poked fun at the foibles of the court and royal family. Wolcot's lasting legacy is his observation that George III said 'what what' a lot. His first forays were against members of the Royal Academy. He also made many comments at the King and Queen. Further subjects include James Boswell, James Bruce and Hannah More. He had great wit and humour and was very successful at coining effective phrases. Leather bound, but in poor condition with a lot of surface wear and splitting at the spine. The back cover of Vol 2 has come away from the book, and the front cover of Vol I is held on by the strings of the binding only. There is light speckling throughout.

Hardcover. Condition: Acceptable. First Edition. 4 volumes. The set is well read. All boards are off. Spines and boards are dry, with chipping at spine edge of volume I and heal of volume III, but title and volume labels are intact and legible. No former owner marks. Texts are in very good condition. Engraved frontispiece portraits in volume I. A period piece of value. John Wolcot (1738 ââ?¬â?? 1819) was an English satirist, who wrote under the pseudonym of "Peter Pindar". In 1780 Wolcot went to London and began writing satires. The first objects of his attentions were the members of the Royal Academy. These attempts being well received, he soon began to fly at higher game, the King and Queen being the most frequent marks for his satirical shafts. Among his other famous objects of his attack was James Boswell. Wolcot had a remarkable vein of humour and wit, which, while intensely comic to persons not involved, stung its subjects to the quick. He had likewise strong intelligence, and a power of coining effective phrases. Ships from Dinkytown in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Due to the size/weight of this book extra charges to apply for international shipping.
