8vo. 7.25 x 5 inches. lx + 236 pp. Bound in original dark green cloth, gilt, with floral gilt blocks. All edges gilt. Some minor wear to extremities, including corners, hinges starting to crack and foxing of flyleaves and preliminaries; otherwise a very good copy. 1895 gift inscription and 1963 signatures on recto of endpaper. Illustrated throughout in pen and ink, including frontispiece and chapter headings. Decorated by initials and by publisher's device on verso of half title. Attractive illustrated edition of Our Village, the most famous work of Mary Russell Mitford (1787-1855), handsomely bound with a long introduction by Anne Thackeray Ritchie (1837-1919), eldest daughter of William Makepeace Thackeray, herself a novelist, short story and children's writer. The complete work was published in five volumes (1824, 26, 28, 30 and 32). Illustrations by Hugh Thomson (1860-1920), who also designed the binding, Irish born artist famous for his pen and ink work in editions of the classics. The author provides an account of village life and characters based on her residence in Three Mile Cross, south of Reading. First Hugh Thomson illustrated edition. Beautifully bound by Bayntun of Bath in full navy morocco with five raised bands, gilt decorated and ruled compartments, titles in gilt to the spine. Upper and lower boards and inner dentelles ruled and decorated in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Two silk ribbon page markers. All edges gilt. The original cloth bound in at the rear. With 100 black and white illustrations throughout by Hugh Thomson. A lovely very near fine copy, the binding square and firm and the gilt bright, the spine just a touch faded. The contents, with a gift inscription to the front blank and some spotting to the prelims are otherwise clean and bright throughout. A beautifully illustrated and bound edition of Mary Russell Mitford's record of country life, originally serialised in 'The Lady's Magazine' in the 1820s and 30s. Crown 4to (10.5 x 7 ins) pp lx + 256, with 100 illustrations by Hugh Thomson, including the frontispiece complete with fitted tissue-guard. A very handsome copy of Mary Mitford's delightful study of rural customs, characters and scenery, which first appeared in parts in the 1820s and 30s. Signed by Author. Book.
