Attractive illustrated edition of Our Village, the most famous work of Mary Russell Mitford (1787-1855), handsomely bound with a long introduction by Anne Thackeray Ritchie (1837-1919), eldest daughter of William Makepeace Thackeray, herself a novelist, short story and children's writer. The complete work was published in five volumes (1824, 26, 28, 30 and 32). Illustrations by Hugh Thomson (1860-1920), who also designed the binding, Irish born artist famous for his pen and ink work in editions of the classics. The author provides an account of village life and characters based on her residence in Three Mile Cross, south of Reading. Upper and lower boards and inner dentelles ruled and decorated in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Two silk ribbon page markers. All edges gilt. The original cloth bound in at the rear. With 100 black and white illustrations throughout by Hugh Thomson. A lovely very near fine copy, the binding square and firm and the gilt bright, the spine just a touch faded. The contents, with a gift inscription to the front blank and some spotting to the prelims are otherwise clean and bright throughout. A beautifully illustrated and bound edition of Mary Russell Mitford's record of country life, originally serialised in 'The Lady's Magazine' in the 1820s and 30s.
