Incongruous as it may sound, Jean Auel writes warm, passionate novels about the Ice Age, a period in Earth's history that occurred over 20,000 years ago. It's a time usually referred to as "prehistory" due to the lack of written records. Auel is known for her painstaking research on prehistoric cultures and survival techniques. Critics praise her insight into gender roles, cave life, and the differences between our Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon ancestors. She also gets high marks for her imagination and the timeless nature of her stories. Her characters are rounded portrayals of people who, although they lived 20,000 years ago, experienced the same problems, conflicts, and emotional complexities of today. Though garbed in animal skins and armed with flint-tipped spears, they are nonetheless modern men and women.
