Into this vivid recreation of a single day in the sweeper and toilet-cleaner Bakha's life, Anand pours a vitality, fire, and richness of detail that earn his place as one of the most important Indian writers of the twentieth century.

FIRST EDITION, some light spotting to early leaves, recurrent at rear and more concerted to final page, pp. 232, crown 8vo, original brown cloth, the backstrip lettered in white and slightly sunned through the dustjacket, top edge brown, other edges spotted, dustjacket with designs by John Farleigh to front and backstrip panels, price-clipped, the backstrip panel browned, some chipping at extremities, very good. A scarce book, his debut novel - it narrates a day in the life of an 'untouchable', the lowest in the caste system, against which the work provides a trenchant argument. Gandhi is both an influence on the novel's social protest and, at its culmination, a character. Forster's Preface praises both the empirical and the intellectual depth behind Anand's presentation of his hero, Bakha.
