Long before "Kids", "Another Day in Paradise" and "Bully", this was the real thing. A gritty, voyeuristic photo essay of the author's life - amongst youthful petty criminals and drug addicts in Oklahoma, this book forever changed the landscape of acceptability for the photographic book in the latter half of the 20th Century. The 1971 Lustrum Press first edition is cited on page 260 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 272-73 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 25 of "From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter", and pages 208-09 of "The Book of 101 Books". Limited slipcased edition of 250 numbered copies, signed by Clark, with an original previously unpublished 8 x 10-inch black-and-white gelatin silver print (also numbered and signed by Clark on verso in pencil. Tulsa was published in by Lustrum Press in 1971 as a limited paperback, eight years after he moved to New York City to freelance and was drafted in the Vietnam War. His experiences during this time culminated in this photo documentary which illustrates his young friends' drug use in black and white. These grunge images were taken in 1963, 1968, and 1971, and they movingly chronicle a youth culture overwhelmed with self-destruction. The haunting nature of the images is achieved also through Larry Clark's techniques: "I do a lot of burning and dodging when making a print and then use bleach. There's not a straight print in the TULSA book. When I'm photographing I always try to shoot against the light (refers to the cover image from Tulsa entitled 'Dead,1970') the film can't handle this and everything gets burned up, since I'm exposing for the shadows" (Clark, 1977). Clark's technique and subjects render what The New York Times has called a "[s]taggering, poignant, raw, compassionate, and utterly honest . . . The world Clark takes us inside is that of white IV drug users in his hometown, the titular city in Oklahoma from the title. This is the undated first hardcover edition (the Lustrum Press published the book as a paperback original). The publication date for this book is usually given as 1979, but the 1983 review of the book in the New York Times and the reference to the "1983" hardcover edition in the Grove Press edition (published in 2000), suggest the usual dating is incorrect. The printer of this edition is different from that of the Lustrum Press version, making it likely that the other bookseller trope about this book?that it was bound from unsold copies or sheets of the first edition?is also not true. [Thanks to Brian Cassidy of Type Punch Matrix for sorting all this out.] According to Cassidy, contemporary advertisements give the print run as 3000 copies. This is one of 400 of those that are numbered and signed by Clark with a laid-in original silver gelatin print of the cover image, captioned below the image, "Dead 1970", but sometimes also referred to as "Billy Man (1968)." The print, on 8 by 10 inch paper, has an image size of 5-7/8 by 8-5/8 inches. It is numbered, dated (1968) and signed by Clark in pencil on the back (verso). The print slides into an archival paper envelope with a matching number written on the outside. First hardcover edition. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. The book is numbered 217/400 and signed by Clark in ink on the title page. The print and envelope also have the same number; the print is signed by Clark on the back. This is the most desirable format of this key 1970s photobook; copies with the print still laid in are increasingly uncommon as the prints are removed and sold into the photo market.
