Trade Paperback. Condition: Good. Reprint. Reprint. Wrappers rubbed, faint stain to bottom ridge. 1995 Trade Paperback. 1172 pp. "A doomed lord, an emergent hero, an array of bizarre creatures, and an ancient royal family plagued by madness and intrigue?these are the denizens of ancient, sprawling, tumbledown Gormenghast Castle. Within its vast halls and serpentine corridors, the members of the Groan dynasty and their master Lord Sepulchrave grow increasingly out of touch with a changing world as they pass their days in unending devotion to meaningless rituals and arcane traditions. Meanwhile, an ambitious kitchen boy named Steerpike rises by devious means to the post of Master of the Ritual while he maneuvers to bring down the Groans. In these extraordinary novels, Peake has created a world where all is like a dream: lush, fantastical, vivid; a symbol of dark struggle. Accompanying the text are Peake's own drawings, illustrating the whole assembly of strange creatures that inhibit Gormenghast. Breathtaking in its power and drenched in dark atmosphere, humor and intrigue, The Gormenghast Trilogy is a classic, one of the great works of 20th century British literature.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Mervyn Peake (illustrator). 5th or later Edition. First Overlook Press Edition - a re-issue of Titus Alone, originally published by Eyre & Spottiswoode in 1959. This edition has a black and white full-page frontispiece illustration by Mervyn Peake to the fore, and some line drawings within the text. ***Unusually, the book has a UK Methuen dustwrapper with a different ISBN number. The book however is the US Overlook Press edition. ***A very good copy with the burgundy cloth-covered spine with gilt titles over pale-grey paper covered boards. Blue front and rear free endpapers and pastedowns. Pleas note that the book is ex-library and has the following library marks: Stamps and remains of paper label to front free endpaper, Northumberland County Library stamp to the title page, and a small ink date and price to the rear pastedown. Apart from these marks, the book is beautifully clean. No foxing. Paper clean and bright. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper which has a publisher's price-sticker 'A.B.P. £10.95' on the front flap. The dustwrapper is printed on nice cream textured laid paper. No tears. No fading. There is some creasing and light marks to the rear panel of the dustwrapper. 224mm x 144mm. 263 pages. ***'In Titus Alone, Titus has abdicated. Born and brought to the edge of manhood in the huge rotting castle of Gormenghast, he rebels against the intolerable age-old ritual of which he is both lord and prisoner and runs headlong into the world. From that moment the reader is engulfed in a stormy world of the imagination in which figures and landscapes loom up with all the vividness, the shock and the inexorable logic of dream and nightmare. ***Those who know Mervyn Peake's work will find again the strong flow of invention, lofty or grotesque, the fecundity and energy, the painter's sharpness of vision and poet's exactness of metaphor and image.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***An ex-library copy of the re-issue of Mervyn Peake's novel Titus Alone, and the first impression of the illustrated Overlook Press edition complete in its original dustwrapper. Unusually, this copy has a Methuen dustwrapper - American edition for sale in the UK. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
