Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. The Modern Library, New York. 1945 (?). Hardcover. ML Giant Edition G065.1. This book states First Edition 1944 but it is a G5 binding and the true first editions were G4 bindings. The G% binding was in use from 1945-1963 and the "false first" on this edition was removed but when? My guess is 1945. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Good; dogeared pages; suntanned spine; shelfwear to head, tail, tips, and board bottom; spotty areas of soiling. No DJ. Brown cloth boards and spine with gilt lettering in a black shadowbox; matching torch bearers on the spine and front board. Clean internals. Internal hinges are sound and not split. Tinted textblock top. 841 pp 8vo. This book is a pentalogy of novels written in the 16th century by François Rabelais, telling the adventures of two giants, Gargantua and his son Pantagruel. The work is written in an amusing, extravagant, and satirical vein, features much erudition, vulgarity, and wordplay, and is regularly compared with the works of William Shakespeare and James Joyce. Rabelais was a polyglot, and the work introduced "a great number of new and difficult words into the French language". The work was stigmatized as obscene by the censors of the College of the Sorbonne, and, within a social climate of increasing religious oppression in a lead up to the French Wars of Religion, it was treated with suspicion, and contemporaries avoided mentioning it. A clean reading copy.
