First edition. 8vo. Petrol blue boards in pictorial dustwrapper, which is illustrated in colour by Quentin Blake. A very good copy in a very good, slightly edge worn, dustwrapper. Illustrated in line by Quentin Blake throughout. "Don't be fooled by those witches with their black hats, black cloaks and broomsticks, though, those are not REAL WITCHES. Real witches are exceedingly difficult to spot in the wild and dress in ordinary clothes, looking very much like ordinary people." Dahl's vital indicators for spotting a real witch include facts like they always wear gloves, they have no toes, are bald as boiled eggs and they have blue spit.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo., aquamarine publisher's boards, lettered in gilt along the spine; in the unclipped pictorial dust jacket designed by Quentin Blake (£6.50 net); pp. [vi], 7-206, [ii]; illustrated throughout with line drawings by Quentin Blake; a near-fine copy of this classic children's work, the pages ever-so-slightly toned, with spine tips a touch pressed; jacket, aside from some minor creases and a couple of spots to the rear flap, also near-fine. First edition. The Witches, one of Dahl's best-selling books, tells the frightening story of a world in which Witches abound, occasionally gathering under the leadership of the Grand High Witch, who plots to turn all unsuspecting children into mice. Although now perceived to be one of his greats, the book received mixed reviews upon publication, but its popularity has remained and it has been adapted for film twice - once in 1990 and another in 2020, with Anne Hathaway in the lead role.

1st edition. Hardcover. Fine in fine dustjacket, not priced, so from the earliest pressing of the jackets, smidgen of spotting on top block and on top rear flap, else a lovely copy of the first impression of one of the author's most famous books, winner of the 1983 Whitbread Award for Best Children's Novel. With the cut signature of Quentin Blake loosely inserted.
First edition, first impression; 8vo; illustrations by Quentin Blake, paper stock beginning to brown as usual; publisher's blue boards, titles to spine gilt, small mark to the front free endpaper, Quentin Blake designed dust-jacket, lightly faded, otherwise a very good copy. A classic dark tale from a master of the genre, the macabre menace only slightly mitigated by the target audience being children. Winner of the Whitbread Award for Children's Novel in 1983, The Witches was also successfully dramatised on several occasions, most famously perhaps the 1990 film featuring Anjelica Huston as the Grand High Witch, which featured a differing ending from that in the book (much to the author's chagrin). Intriguingly, it has also found itself at one time or another banned for perceived misogyny, as Dahl states that only women can be witches: 'I do not wish to speak badly about women,' the author writes. 'Most women are lovely. But the fact remains that all witches are women. There is no such thing as a male witch. On the other hand, a ghoul is always a male. both are dangerous. But neither of them is half as dangerous as a REAL WITCH'. Dahl's creation has also found itself taken off reading lists across schools in America for the possibility of turning children to witchcraft with its perceived satanic themes and the fear of desensitising young minds to violence.
