Goncharov was from Simbirsk - the same birthplace later of both Lenin and Kerensky- and born into a wealthy merchant family. He became a writer and in this capacity was employed as a secretary to Admiral Putyalin who was about to take what became a three-year voyage on the frigate Pallada, his mission being to inspect the distant outposts of the Russian empire such as Alaska and also to establish trade relations with Japan. Goncharov kept a log book of the voyage and this served as the basis for the book he duly wrote and which became very popular.
