Internally, all the plates are present and complete. The endpapers are a little grubby and the rear endpaper has a vertical crease down the right-hand edge, there are a couple of grubby marks throughout the book but overall, very good and complete. Laid in is an unused colour postcard of The Sleeping Fool (Plate #28 in this book). Also laid in is an undated newspaper obituary of Elizabeth Collins. 25x19cm (9¾"x7½"). First edition. 26pp including introductory essay, followed by 31 plates of which two in colour. Original black cloth, backstrip titled in gilt. Front cover a little speckled over roughly-triangular patch (of height up to 4cm and base 8cm) across lower inner corner, and lightly so along remainder of lower edge and along short section of upper edge; rear cover lightly speckled along lower edge. Lower outer corner of front cover a little bumped & creased, but still square; associated light creasing at tips of lower outer corners of contents throughout, well away from print of any kind. A little sticking damage between lower edges of plates 26 & 27, along 4cm to a height of less than 1cm, confined to margins and well below images. VERY GOOD copy in VERY GOOD unclipped dust jacket nicked and a little rubbed at head of backstrip panel, and with single minor nicks at upper and lower edges of rear panel.

This is the new edition with additional illustrations, published in 1981. Signed by the artist on title page. Separate card, featuring a painting by Cecil Collins entitled "The Sleeping Fool", is laid in between pages 28 and 29. Marginal wear to spine ends and leading corners. Inside back cover is a little sunned. Binding is sound and pages are tight throughout. Text and illustrations are clear. AF. By Artist. Used.

The title-essay is the key to any understanding of Collins' art: "Our society has rejected the Fool, not only because he cannot be exploited, not only because they judge everything by its usefulness; but they are frightened and disturbed by the Fool, because he is the child of life, and not of abstract virtue.".

A hard cover publication small 4to. with 26 pages of introduction followed by 31 full page illustrations, two of which are in colour. The overall condition of the book is at least very good, the text and plates being completely unmarked. The d / w. is missing 1 square inch to top of front panel and slightly more to the bottom and spine. The titles stand out clearly however. Images available on request.
