About this Item: 18. ROBERTS, David. THE HOLY LAND, SYRIA, IDUMEA, ARABIA, EGYPT AND NUBIA. After lithographs by Louis Haghe from drawings made on the spot by David Roberts, R.A. with historical descriptions by The Revd George Croly. London: Day & Son, 1856. This is volume 5 only. Large octavo. 11 by 7 7/8 in. (27.9 x 20 cm). This volume was part of a new edition, though in a smaller format, of Roberts's two famous works: The Holy Land, three folio volumes, 1842-9, and Egypt and Nubia, three folio volumes, 1846-9. The volume is finely illustrated and contains all plates called for. There are 43 plates in all, including one map; the rest are lithographed views, tinted in one or two, and, very occasionally, in three colors. The plates are quite fresh overall. The volume is ex-library and most plates have an imperceptible ink stamp on the reverse of each plate, with the exception of the lithographed title-page which is stamped in the image. The book block is loose in worn and rubbed nineteenth-century bnding of quarter morocco and marbled boards. Offered as is, but illustrated with beautiful tinted lithographs. (Abbey 388). About this Item: Day & Son 1855-56, London, 1855. Second (First Small Folio) Edition. 285 x 195 mm. (11 1/8 x 7 3/8"). Six volumes bound in three. Second (First Small Folio) Edition. Fine 20th century crimson crushed morocco by Zaehnsdorf for Asprey & Co. (stamp-signed on front turn-in), boards with simple gilt-rule border, raised bands, spine compartments ruled in gilt, gilt titling, densely gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. 250 FINE TINTED LITHOGRAPHED PLATES, MOSTLY OF VIEWS OF THE HOLY LAND, by Louis Haghe after Roberts (a few with hand coloring), including engraved titles, two engraved maps, and an engraved portrait of Roberts. Abbey, Travel 385, 388, and 272; Blackmer 1432; Tobler, p. 229. Text leaves with faint overall darkening (due to paper quality), isolated small patches of foxing or minor smudges to margin of plates, otherwise AN ESPECIALLY FINE SET, the text entirely clean, smooth, and fresh, the bindings unworn, and THE IMAGES VERY CLEAN, RICH, AND ENTIRELY WITHOUT FOXING. This is a remarkably clean and bright copy, in a very pleasing binding, of one of the great travel books from the Victorian heyday of the genre. Roberts (1796-1864) started out painting houses and then theatrical scenery, but soon developed a reputation for paintings and lithographs of exotic scenery. His "Holy Land" is one of the most famous English illustrated books of the century. Its success was due in part to its lavishness, but certainly also to "Roberts' great accuracy as a draughtsman, his strong sense of country and place [and] . . . his love of architecture." (Houfe) Abbey says that "Haghe's skillful and delicate lithography, and his faithful interpretation of Roberts's draughtsmanship and dramatic sense, combine in what are undoubtedly remarkable examples of tinted lithographic work. . . . one feels that the colossal subjects and broad vistas were ideally suited to Roberts's talent, trained as he was in theatrical scene-painting." Ours is an especially appealing copy of a work often disfigured with foxing. About this Item: London, Day & Son (vol. 3: New York, D. Appleton & Co.), 1855-1856., 1856. 6 vols. bound as 3. Large 8vo (300 x 220 mm). With 250 numbered plates (image size 120 x 170 to 150 x 220 mm), including a tinted lithographed portrait of the artist, 6 tinted lithographed title-pages, 2 stone-engraved maps and 239 tinted and double-tinted lithographed and 2 chromolithographed views. Contemporary, richly gold-tooled reddish-brown morocco, side-stitched and oversewn, then sewn on 5 recessed cords, with a hollow back, 5 false bands on the spine, gold-tooled turn-ins, combed and curled marbled endpapers, headbands in red and yellow, gilt and gauffered edges. With thin paper guard leaves facing each plate. Second edition, with reduced illustrations but with more of them double-tinted or chromolithographed, of one of the most splendid and historically important visual records of the Middle East, after drawings by David Roberts (1796-1864) from the sketches he made from life during his travels through what is now Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Lebanon in 1838 and 1839. In Egypt he ventured up the Nile as far as the Nubian temples at Abu Simbel, near the present border with Sudan and travelled by camel through the Sinai to the extraordinary carved-rock buildings of Petra. These had been unknown to Europeans until Burckhardt discovered them in 1812 and 1813, so Roberts's views are among the earliest and are in many ways better than the few predecessors. In Lebanon he ventured as far as Baalbek, which had seen few European visitors before Egypt annexed it in 1832. Other sites he visited and drew include Cairo, Suez, Gaza, Jerusalem and Beirut. He was one of the first Europeans allowed to make drawings of the interior of mosques, so even in well-known cities these too opened a new world to European eyes. His views also provide a very detailed visual record of many sites that were afterward destroyed or disturbed. He drew them during the infancy of photography, before it reached the Middle East and long before it reached maturity there. His views of the modern cities also preserve records of both their architecture and their daily life and he shows spectacular landscapes in the mountains, around the Dead Sea and along the Nile and the Jordan. Roberts, born to a poor (Welsh?) family in Edinburgh, was apprenticed as a house painter, moved to London and worked his way up to paint sets for the Drury Lane Theatre and others. Thanks to patrons who appreciated his talents and hard work he was able to make the expensive and dangerous voyage through the Middle East. George Croly (in volumes 1-3) and William Brockedon (in volumes 4-6) provided explanatory and historical notes on the sites shown in Roberts's views. - Roberts's views were originally published in two separate works, issued in parts in the years 1842 to 1849 and often found together. One centred on the Holy Land, though also including views in other parts of the Middle East, while the other was devoted to Egypt and Nubia. The views in the former were made with only a single tint block and even the latter used fewer tint blocks than the present second edition and only one chromolithograph. The present edition, with sometimes very intricate double tints and two chromolithographs (with black and three tint blocks) is a masterpiece of tinted lithography. Since the lithographers used photographic reductions of the lithographic views of the first edition as an aid to their work, the book also pioneered the use of photography in graphic reproduction. The lithographed title-pages are dated 1855 except for those of vol. 3 (from the simultaneous New York issue, undated) and 6 (1856) but volumes 2-6 include plates dated 1856. The dates of the plates in all six volumes range from 16 April 1855 to 15 December 1856. - The title-page of volume 3 was intended for the simultaneous New York issue, but appears to have always been part of the present copy. In very good condition, with occasional light foxing, mostly on the backs of the plates, and with a faint marginal water stain in the lower outside corner of many plates in volumes 3 and 4, not approaching the printed image. The inside front hinge of the second volume as bound has separated from the book block and the bindings show some wear at the hinges and extremities, but they are otherwise also very good. 250 mostly tinted and double-tinted lithographs providing stunning early views of the Middle East, including Petra, Abu Simbel and the interiors of several mosques. Abbey, Travel 388 (lacking vols. 5-6). Blackmer 1432 (note). Gay 25. Hiler 205. Cf. Hamilton, Europe and the Arab world 66 (1842-49 ed.); Lipperheide, Lc 12 & Ma 27 (1842-49 ed.); Tooley 401f. (1842-49 ed.); not in Colas. Seller Inventory # 45585

Erste Ausgabe dieses epochalen Tafelwerks über den Nahen Osten mit allen 248 Ansichten des Heiligen Landes (in getönten Lithos) und Ägyptens (in farbig getönten Lithos). - Blackmer 1432. Lipperheide 1590 und 1591. Röhricht 1983. Abbey, Travel, 385 und 272. - "David Roberts was the first professional artist to visit the Near East without a patron or a connection to a military expedition or missionary group. He sailed to Alexandria in 1838 and for eleven months traveled up the Nile River, across deserts and mountains, through Egypt and the Holy Land, to arrive in Jerusalem on Easter 1839. He continued north to Lebanon and departed from Beirut in May. Roberts recorded his impressions of landscapes, temples, ruins, and people in three sketchbooks and more than 272 watercolors. These sketches and paintings provided the basis for the 247 lithographs published with text between 1842 and 1849 as the three-volume "Holy Land." The images were produced by Louis Haghe, the best and most prolific lithographer of the time. Originally from Tournai, Belgium, Haghe moved to England before 1825 and established himself as specialist of the hand-tinted lithograph. His sensitive handling of the lithographer`s tools imparts a range of tonality and color as well as a sense of the delicacy and spontaneous quality of Roberts`s original images. Roberts`s plates are among the most popular images of famous sites in the Near East. As John Ruskin wrote they make "true portraiture of scenes of historical and religious interest. They are faithful and laborious beyond any outlines from nature I have ever seen." (ww.metmuseum.org). - "In point of bulk and ambition Roberts`s Holy Land was one of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and it was the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph. There is pleasure to be had from many of the individual plates, where Haghe`s skilful and delicate lithography, and his faithful interpretation of Roberts`s draughtsmanship and dramatic sense, combine in what are undoubtedly remarkable examples of tinted lithographic work. Particularly in the Egypt and Nubia section, one feels that the colossal subjects and broad vistas were ideally suited to Roberts`s talent, trained as he was in theatrical scene-painting during his early days in Carlisle, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London.Roberts was fully appreciative of Haghe`s work, writing that: `Haghe has not only surpassed himself, but all that has hitherto been done of a similar nature. He has rendered the views in a style clear, simple, and unlaboured, with a masterly vigour and boldness which none but a painter like him could have transferred to stone`" (Abbey 341). - Das Werk erschien in insgesamt 3 Varianten: Die kolorierte Subskribtions-Ausgabe (mit den 2 Bll. "Subskribenten-Verzeichnis"), eine Ausgabe mit farbigen getönten Lithographien und eine Ausgabe mit getönten Lithographien. Vorliegend ist eine Mischausgabe, die Ägypten Bände enthalten die farbig getönten Lithos, die Bände des heiligen Landes mit den getönten Lithos. - Titel mit hs. Namen. Teils etw. wasserrandig. About this Item: Day & Son, London, 1855. Hardcover. First Quarto Edition. With Historical Descriptions by The Revd. George Croly. Six quarto (8-1/4" x 12") volumes bound in three in later half red morocco leather with matching corners and gilt-lettered and decorated spines. Complete with 250 tinted lithographs including the frontispiece portrait of David Roberts in the first volume, a frontispiece of the temple at Abu Simbel and the map of his tour in the second, as well as all 6 lithographed title pages and print lists at the opening of each volume. In 1838 Roberts traveled to Egypt, which had grown popular both as a travel destination for the adventurous antiquarian, and as the subject of highly valued artworks. The journey became an extensive tour of the region, including Jerusalem, Petra (in modern Jordan), Giza, Thebes and various sites along the Nile. During this trip, he constantly sketched stunning views of colossal ruins, ancient temples of the Egyptian and Persian empires, and particularly biblical sites in and around Jerusalem. His sketches also depicted the local customs, clothes and contemporary dwellings, markets and palaces, and the third published volume (the first half of the second volume in this set) includes a scene depicting his meeting with Muhammad Ali Pasha in Alexandria, which he did not sketch at the time but is reputed to have produced from memory. Upon his return to Britain, after he was fêted by high society in Scotland, he worked with the engraver Louis Haghe to produce the collection in book form, funded by subscriber which he personally solicited. Thanks to the popularity of the subject matter, and the relative absence of British art on the same subject, he was quite successful, with Queen Victoria as subscriber number one (her large paper folio copy is still in the Royal Collection.) Louis Haghe, along with William Day, was a Lithographer to the Queen and innovator in the process of colour lithography, and the lithographs in this volume benefit from his skill. Some foxing, heaviest on the titles and initial leaves, occasionally to the margins of the plates but rarely affecting the images. Public library bookplate with small ink stamps at various places throughout, sometimes in the margins of the plates but never on the images. Hinges repaired with new paste-downs, general scuffing and wear along spine edges but bindings still tight. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 018398

About this Item: London, F. G. Moon, 1842-1849., 1849. Large folio (610 x 456 mm). 6 vols. [Holy Land:] Lithogr. portrait of Roberts by C. Baugniet, 3 hand-coloured lithogr. titles, 120 hand-coloured lithogr. plates, all drawn on stone by Louis Haghe after David Roberts. [Egypt:] 3 hand-coloured lithogr. titles, 121 hand-coloured lithogr. plates, all drawn on stone by Louis Haghe after David Roberts, 1 engr. map. Contemp. citron morocco, bound by J. Wright, covers panelled in gilt, spines with raised bands in seven compartments, morocco lettering pieces in the 2nd and 3rd, the others with an overall repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. An extraordinary set, comprising both of Roberts' monumental works on the Middle East, both in their first and most desirable hand-coloured deluxe issues. Bound in magnificent uniform citron morocco by John Wright of London. "One of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing and [.] the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph" (Abbey, p. 341), these works were originally published in three states: as an ordinary tinted edition, a hand-coloured de luxe issue in loose proofs, and - combining the virtues of both - the almost unobtainable hand-coloured and bound de luxe issue (as here), which the publisher Moon offered at the tenfold price of the regular one. Roberts masterpiece was issued in 41 parts over seven years, beautifully lithographed by Louis Haghe, to whom Roberts paid tribute in glowing terms: "Haghe has not only surpassed himself, but all that has hitherto been done of a similar nature. He has rendered the views in a style clear, simple and unlaboured, with a masterly vigour and boldness which none but a painter like him could have transferred to stone." - After an apprenticeship to the Scottish house-painter, Gavin Buego, David Roberts (1796-1864) became assistant scene painter at the Pantheon theatre in Edinburgh. He continued scene painting in Glasgow and finally, in 1821, was hired to work with Clarkson Stanfield at the Drury Lane theatre in London. Both artists exhibited at the Society of British Artists, Royal Academy and British Institution, and by 1830 Roberts was firmly established as a topographical artist and was able to give up his work in the theatre. In 1838 he made plans for a journey to the Near East, inspired by his passion for artistic adventure. He departed in August 1839 for Alexandria and spent the remainder of the year in Cairo and visiting the major tombs and sites of Egypt. The following February he journeyed to the Holy Land, making stops in Suez, Mount Sinai and Petra. He spent time in Gaza before entering Jerusalem and concluded his tour by spending several months visiting the biblical sites of the Holy Land. Roberts returned to England at the end of 1839 and submitted his drawings to F. G. Moon in 1840. Moon arranged to bring out a volume of Scripture history, paying Roberts 3,000 pounds for the copyright of the sketches and for overseeing Haghe's efforts. Both the exhibition of his original watercolours and the subsequent published work were an immediate success and confirmed his reputation as an architectural and landscape artist of the highest order. - Coloured sets of Roberts are generally encountered with the lithographs trimmed, coloured and mounted on card, in imitation of the original watercolours. The present set, by contrast, is comprised of the regular tinted lithographed issue but with very fine contemporary hand colouring. The palette of colouring is consistent with the colouring of the "on card" issue, and the strictly contemporary binding confirms the age of the hand colouring. This set is beautifully bound by John Wright of London in a rather unusual and striking full citron morocco. Flourishing between 1830 and 1860, Wright was among the most fashionable of London binders in this important period. Ramsden refers to Wright as "a binder of the highest order" (Ramsden, London Book Binders, p. 154). Exceedingly rare thus; a copy in the second state as described above (hand-coloured but unbound in loose sheets) commanded $242,500 at Christie's in 2012. - Provenance: the Duke of Northumberland (Property of His Grace, The Duke of Northumberland, Books from Berkeley Castle sold by order of the Trustee of the Earl of Berkeley Will Trust, Sotheby s London, 8-9 May 1986, lot 335). Ibrahim-Hilmy II, 176. Abbey Travel II, 272 & 385. Tooley 401. Lipperheide Ma 27. Cf. Hiler 753. The Heritage Library, Islamic Treasures, s. v. "Art" (illustration). Seller Inventory # 34117

In the course of two and a half months in 1838, traveling some 800 miles south from Cairo, Roberts recorded the monumental temple sites along the Nile in more than a hundred sketches. As the first British artist to sketch the monuments of Ancient Egypt, set on "Plains so vast.that, until you come near them, you have no idea of their magnificence," Roberts was well aware of the stir his drawings would create in London. According to John Ruskin, writing in PRAETERITA, Roberts's drawings "were the first studies ever made conscientiously by an English painter, not to exhibit his own skill, but to give true portraiture of scenes of historical and religious interest.". About this Item: The Folio Society, 2011. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Roberts, David (illustrator). First Edition Thus. Two volumes measuring 20" x 13 ¾". Fine copies with minor handling wear. No. 212 of the Folio Society's limited edition of 1000 copies; hand-numbered on a special limitation page in both volumes. Bound in full red cloth printed in black and gold with designs by Neil Gower from Roberts? originals. Gilded top edges; red ribbon markers. The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea and Arabia: 304 pp; 123 plates, portrait of Roberts and map. Egypt and Nubia: 272 pp; 124 plates and map. Printed by Editoriale Bortolazzi, Verona, on heavyweight Gardapat Kiara paper. Presented in hand-made slipcases bound in cloth and lined with coloured paper, with inserts in the bases to support the weight of the books. David Roberts was the first British painter to make an artistic expedition to Egypt and the Holy Land. The result of his travels was a picturesque vision of the Near East that has been hugely influential ever since. The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea and Arabia was first published in 20 parts by F. G. Moon in 1842-44, followed by Egypt and Nubia in the same format in 1847-49. The parts were designed to be bound in three volumes, each with its own title page. This Folio Society edition reproduces every word and image from the first edition, slightly reduced in format. Page numbers have been added for ease of navigation, and the List of Subjects has been reset for the same reason. All 247 lithographs have been reproduced from one of the few complete hand-coloured copies, held at the John Rylands Library in Manchester. Because of its scale, and the scarcity of complete first editions, Roberts?s work has rarely been reproduced in its entirety and never before on this scale. Here we have two fine copies of this exquisite and highly desirable Folio Society Limited Edition which quickly sold out when it was published in 2010, resulting in an unlimited edition in a smaller format being issued in 2014 to meet demand. The 2014 edition is also beautiful but not to be confused with this, the superlative edition. Slipcases also in fine condition with minor rubs to corners and a light 3 cm scratch to the back of the Holy Land slipcase. Heavy/oversize set. You will be asked for additional postage for all services other than standard U.K. post. Seller Inventory # 004366

About this Item: London: F. G. Moon, 1842-9, 1842. 6 volumes bound in 4, large folio (613 x 430 mm). Publishers' dark purple half morocco, gilt-blocked arms of Jerusalem on front covers, gilt panelled spines, gilt edges. Some skilful restoration to spines and corners, some spotting, chiefly marginal; a very good copy. 6 lithographed pictorial titles, 121 tinted lithographed plates, 120 half-page tinted lithographs by Louis Haghe after Roberts, lithographed portrait of the author by C. Baugniet on India paper, 2 engraved maps. First edition of "one of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph. there is pleasure to be had from many of the individual plates, where Haghe's skillful and delicate lithography, and his faithful interpretation of Robert's draughtsmanship and dramatic sense, combine in what are undoubtedly remarkable examples of tinted lithographic work" (Abbey). Roberts had toured Eqypt, Alexandria, Jerusalem, Palestine, Lebanon, and Baalbec during 1838 to 1839 making detailed drawings of the most significant sites, from which he worked up the final pictures for his master work. Provenance: Peter Carthew (1808-1870), of 15A Kensington Palace Gardens, with his bookplate, presumably bought at publication; passed on to his daughter Alice Grace Elizabeth Carthew (1867-1940), with her notes in pencil initialled "A.C." Alice Carthew was a noted collector of William Blake prints and antiquities, subsequently donating her abundant collections to institutions including the British Museum, the Hunterian, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Tate Collection. She donated Mycenean antiquities and a Cycladic figurine to Girton College, Cambridge, and made a number of watercolours for the Egypt Exploration Society of artefacts from their excavations at Deir el-Bahari. Alice Carthew's pencil annotations in the Holy Land volumes (dated 1914 and 1926) relate to the topographical accuracy of Roberts's views, presumably after visits she had made to the actual locations. For example next to "The Ravine" she notes "steps not steep enough", and beside "Petra Looking South" "good picture. far too much water". Abbey Travel 385 and 272; Blackmer 1432; Tooley 401-2.
