Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First edition. x, 216pp. Spine base a bit bumped else fine in just about fine dust jacket with a tiny bit of wear. Basis for the 1997 James Cromwell film of the same name. When first published, this novel, the story of an orphan raised by his Cherokee Indian grandparents, was thought to be a true story (so stated on the dust jacket). It was marketed as the life of Forrest Carter and that the author was part Cherokee and became a cowboy drifter. The authenticity of the book was questioned when *Texas Monthly* published an article about the author in 1992, "The Real Education of Little Tree." The article stated that the author's real name was Asa Earl Carter, and provided details of his segregationist past and stated that *The Education of Little Tree* was a work of fiction. The author also wrote the novel *The Outlaw Josey Wales*.

First Edition. First Printing Octavo (21cm); white cloth covered boards titled in gilt on the spine; brown endpapers; dustjacket; 216pp.; spine ends are pushed; former owner's name on the front free endpaper; faint soil at rear; Very Good+ or better. The dustjacket is unclipped (priced $7.95) with minor rubbing to the top edge; Near Fine. "This autobiographical story of Forrest Carters boyhood illuminates tha almost mystical communion between Indian and his land- a feeling that goes far beyond what we call ecology." (from the dustjacket) "Whether or not Carter wrote The Education of Little Tree from his actual childhood memories of his Cherokee uncle and grandparents has been disputed. Carter had been an active participant in several white supremacist organizations, including the Ku Klux Klan and the White Citizens' Council. He was also a speechwriter for Alabama governor George Wallace, for whom he allegedly wrote Wallace's famous line "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.". in 1970 he ran for governor. on a White supremacist platform, finishing fourth among the seven candidates listed on the Democratic Party ballot. In the years following his active political engagement, Carter left Alabama, changed his name, and began his second career as an author, taking care to conceal his background." (from Wikipedia).
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First edition 1st printing, Fine minus, unread book that is lightly crimped at top of spine, in a Fine minus jacket with a very light scratch and slight rubbing to back panel. This was a cheaply produced book and is fairly scarce in such nice condition. This novel was originally thought to be Carter s autobiographically story of being an orphan raised by his Cherokee Indian grandparents. Carter claimed to be part Cherokee and was thought to be a cowboy drifter. However, he fooled his publisher and most of his readers with his fictional account. Carter was actually living a double life and had been an avid segregationist and a speech writer for Alabama Governor George Wallace. The 1992 story, The Real Education of Little Tree (published in Texas Monthly), covers the history of Carter (who was actually Asa Earl Carter) and his fake autobiography a fascinating story that is stranger than fiction.
