About this Item: The British Museum 1894 and 1895, London, 1894. Hardcover. Two Volumes. Text volume: Folio (20.5 inches x 15.5 inches), clvi + 378 pp. original half green morocco with black pebbled cloth boards, raised bands, top edge gilt, b&w in-text illustrations throughout, bibliography. Plate volume: Elephant Folio (13 inches x 11 inches), viii + 37 double-page color plates mounted on cloth hinges, original half black leather with black pebbled cloth boards. The first edition of the Facsimile Plate volume was published as a stand-alone work in 1890 but the demand for a text version to accompany it resulted in the production of these two volumes, with the 1894 Plate volume produced to accompany the 1895 First Edition of the Text volume. The plate volume, reproduces in magnificent fold-out facsimiles, "The Papyrus of Ani," which is perhaps the most superbly illustrated of the surviving copies of the "Book of the Dead". "The Papyrus of Ani," is said to have been found at Thebes and is thought to date from the XVIIIth Dynasty, about 1400BC. It was purchased for the British Museum in 1888 by Wallis Budge. The original is in scroll form - about 76 feet in length. It is here reproduced in 37 segments, each on a double-page spread of approx. 20 x 48 inches. The text volume is a thick heavy quarto, and comprises a lengthy Introduction detailing the history and context of the Book of the Dead and the Papyrus of Ani, a table of chapters, and a typeset version of the hieroglyphic text, with interlinear transliteration and complete English translation. Inscribed on the second blank to "C. H. Page / Kerma /Soudan / 3.6.98 / Presented by British Museum / per E. Wallis Budge Esq." While the inscription is in a hand very similar to Budge's, a few significant differences, plus the use of the word "Esquire" after his name (which would not typically have been used by the person to whose name it was suffixed) suggest that the inscription was written on his behalf, rather than by him. The recipient, Charles H. Page (d. 1918), was a a British Marine Engineer and Assistant Director of the Department of Steamers and Boats in the Sudan, who had strong antiquarian interests and on occasion facilitated the provision of boats etc. to archaeological expeditions. Condition: text volume: boards a little discolored, with rubbing to cloth and corners rounded, thumb print-sized flaw in cloth on front board, front hinge has a few cracks, but holding firm. Internal hinges neatly (professionally) reinforced, a little mild discoloration and a small discolored patch to the lower fore-edge of the first few leaves, overall a solid VG or better volume. Plates volume: Cloth a little discolored and rubbed, corners bumped, cloth rubbed away from significant strips of both fore-edges revealing the boards beneath, still the spine is undamaged and the binding strong. A few leaves have chips from the bottom corners, only one is significant but does not effect the plate itself, a number of the plates have tears at the inner margins, a few of these have old tape repairs on the verso, and majority have more recent acid-free tissue paper repairs. A few light marks, chips and tears, here and there. Over all a solid, about VG - or perhaps a little better - set. Well used, but still solid in the original bindings, and uncommon thus given the weight and size of the volumes. Very large and heavy and will require additional shipping. First Edition of Text. Second Edition of Plates. Seller Inventory # 61067

About this Item: London and New York The Medici Society, Ltd. and G. P. Putnams 1913, 1913. 2 volumes. First Medici Society edition, with a very early facsimile of the actual papyri and a plate by plate description of the Papyrus of Ani. With 37 beautifully produced chromo-lithographic colour folding plates reproducing in facsimile the Papyrus of Ani, additionally illustrated throughout the text. Tall royal 8vo, publisher s original red cloth lettered in gilt and decorated in blind on the spines, and with elaborate embossed pictorial designs and lettering in blind on both upper covers. vi, [1], 337, plates; viii, 339-704 pp. A very handsome set, clean and beautifully preserved, internally fine and bight. RARE AND IMPORTANT EDITION WITH CHROMO-LITHOGRAPH PLATES and a fine printing of Budge s great English translation in two volumes. The BOOK OF THE DEAD was inscribed, in the form of various compositions, by the Egyptians upon the walls of tombs and sarcophagi, coffins and funeral stelae, papyri and amulets to ensure the well-being of the dead in the world beyond the grave. These translations by Budge, were done from papyri and other documents found chiefly at Thebes, and, taken together, are generally known as the Theban Recension of the Book of the Dead, or, the great national funeral work which was copied by the scibes for themselves and for Egyptian Kings and Queens, Princes and nobles, gentle and simple, rich and poor, from about B.C. 1600 to B.C. 900. The translation by Budge was made as literal as possible and stands today as one of the very greatest translations of an ancient text. It brings to light today the belief of the ancient Egyptians that these chapters would give the deceased the power to have and to enjoy life everlasting, to give everything that would be required in the life beyond the grave, to ensure victory over foes, the power to go wherever, and the guarantee of preservation of the mummy intact and finally, to enable the soul to enter into the bark of Ra or into the abode of the blessed that had been conceived for the deceased. From the Preface: "In preparing the material for these volumes a new copy of the text had been made, and supplementary Chapters and Sections have been added from the funerary papyri that have been aquired.since 1892. The translations have been rewritten, and the notes have been corrected and amplified in the light of recent discoveries. The greater part of the Introduction has also been rewritten, and the entire work thus becomes a truly 'New Edition,' fully revised to the date of issue." A quotation from the Preface will suffice to explain the importance of the work: "The Papyrus of Ani.is the largest, most perfect, the best-preserved, and best illuminated of all the papyri which date from the second half of the XVIIIth dynasty (about B.C. 1500 to 1400). Its rare vignettes, and hymns, and chapters, and its descriptive and introductory rubrics render it of unique importance for the study of the Book of the Dead, and it takes a high place among the authoritative texts of the Theban version of that remarkable work. Although it contains less than one-half of the chapters which are commonly assigned to that version, we may conclude that Ani's exalted official position as Chancellor of the ecclesiastical revenues and endowments of Abydos and Thebes would have ensured a selection of such chapter as would suffice for his spiritual welfare in the future life. We may therefore regard the Papyrus of Ani as typical of the funeral book in vogue among the Theban nobles of his time.". Seller Inventory # 29281
