About this Item: John Miles, Ltd. London [1936], 1936. 4to. Cloth backed stiff pictorial covers cut-out for faces on upper cover, with ten thick paper leaves, each with a full-page colour illustration on recto, and a black & white illustration on verso, each leaf with a cut-out head of a negro boy at the top, with varying comical expressions. Neat internal repair to top corner of front cover. A bit dust-soiled. Near fine. Rare (and perhaps rightly so). Only three copies traced in institutional libraries (British Library, Oxford University, National Library of Scotland). Made and printed in Germany. About this Item: Hardcover. Condition: Very Good +. Roschanz, Professor Ludwig (illustrator). (Black Interest) TEN LITTLE NIGGER BOYS with drawings and verses by Professor Ludwig Roschanz. We offer here the original artwork and typed manuscript for a proposed edition of the traditional counting verses. The artwork is signed and dated by Professor Roschanz in Wien, Austria in 1949. The manuscript is set up in book form (Oblong 12mo - 9-1/2" x 7-5/8") with a cloth spine and art paper over thick board pages. [20] pp. including covers. Every page is profusely illustrated with wonderful (if you can overlook the inherent racist and stereotypical nature of them), highly detailed watercolor drawings of young black children and their misadventures that reduce their numbers one by one, from ten down to none. The book is accompanied with a rejection letter from Thomas Nelson & Sons dated 9-7-52 stating that they are unable to make an offer for the book. There is minor wear to the manuscript, but otherwise, this is a rather spectacular and well executed production of a book that would have been considered acceptable some sixty years ago but fortunately, not so much today. The condition of the manuscript is VERY GOOD +. Seller Inventory # 000417
