First Edition in Book Form/First Issue with all points present (p.213 misnumbered 113, list of plates with "b" at bottom); Autograph Letter SIGNED by Dickens to author Percy Fitzgerald recommending a title for Fitzgerald's upcoming book ("The Doctor's Mixture"), on Gad's Hill stationary and dated 4/4/1870. The Morgan Library records a follow up letter on the same subject dated May of 1870. A Very Good to Near Fine copy, rebound by the renowned bookbinders Sangorski and Sutcliffe of London, with final lines of the novel in gilt, encircling the upper cover in a decoratively ruled border; publisher's red cloth covers and spine bound in. An extraordinary presentation of one of the all time classic works of literature; signed Dickens pieces with association and provenance are scarce in today's marketplace. This copy is in very good to near fine condition with light rubbing and age-toning to the board edges and front board; a few small tears are present to the page edges at pages 2, 131, 212, and the bottom of the engraved title page; top page corners lightly bumped for first 50 or so pages; scattered small age-spots throughout text; plate at p. 136 has a repaired short tear; rear free papers slightly loose; and ribbon marker mildly frayed at bottom. Overall, a highly presentable and collectible piece; an important addition to any classic literature library. Signed by Author(s).

[Literature] FINELY BOUND SET, ex libris Sir William Thomas Madge. Twenty-one volumes bound as fifteen. Octavo (18 x 13 x 53cm). Each title with eight illustrated plates, including a frontispiece (excepting Life and Speeches). Quite thin paper with small print. INSCRIBED in 'Sketches by Boz' by the owner and editor of The Globe newspaper, George C.H. Armstrong (1836-1907), to his close colleague W.T. Madge, with whom he would go on to establish 'The People' in 1882: 'Presented by the | Proprietor of the "Globe" | to Mr. W.T. Madge | as a token of respect | and acknowledgement of | his valuable services as | publisher, | Geo. C.H. Armstrong, | Jan. 1st 1872 | 110 Strand.' Contemporary red half morocco, with raised bands, gilt titles and decoration to spines, and matching grained cloth over boards. All edges gilt, with marbled endpapers. Internally crisp and clean. Bindings toned to spines, with some moderate general wear, and some re-colouring to joints and corners. Very good. Featuring all of Dickens' complete novels, as well as 'Pictures from Italy,' 'American Notes', 'The Uncommercial Traveller,' and 'A Child's History of England'. Featuring additionally Camden's Life of Dickens, and 'Speeches', but not including 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood.'. A wonderful UNRESTORED copy bound in the ORIGINAL publisher's Red Cloth. The binding is tight with light wear to the boards. The pages are clean with minor discoloration to the endpapers.
