About this Item: Liveright Publishing Corp., 1931. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Strange Brother, a novel by Blair Niles. First edition. Liveright Publishing indicated in 1937: "As a general rule we have no marking on the copyright page of our publications to show our first edition, although on subsequent editions we print Second, Third, etc." The copyright page for this copy of STRANGE BROTHER says only: Copyright 1931 by Blair Niles Manufactured in the United States. XX Book condition: good. The text block is in near fine condition with no tears, dog ears, or marks. Pages are age-toned as are the endpapers, which also are puckering near the gutters. The blue-cloth board is bowed along the long edge of the front cover (less with the back cover). The front and back cover has small white spots and discolorations. One corner is bumped, as is the spine (top and bottom). The title, author, and publisher are clearly visible on the spine. 7 ½ x 5 ½, 341 pages, 13 ounces XX This is a rare book for its time, especially with its depiction of a sympathetic gay male character and its exploration of Harlem's night life (not just the Cotton Club kind of nightspot, but also the jazz and blues clubs for Harlem's predominantly African American inhabitants). Multiple points-of-view are expressed through a gay artist (Mark), his African American friends, an open-minded white divorcee (June) who befriends Mark, an older suitor of June (Seth), various wealthy friends of June, a Sicilian boy (Rico), a flamboyant gay male (Nelly) arrested by an undercover cop, and others. Although the book follows some paths that would become mandatory for the next 30 years in literature, it is often free of the worst clichés about the LGBTQ world. XX Mary Blair Rice, better known by the pen name Blair Niles (1880¿1959) was an American novelist and travel writer. She was a founding member of the Society of Woman Geographers. The name Blair Niles was adopted in part from the surname of her late second husband, Robert Niles, Jr. The first wife of oceanographer William Beebe, Niles also wrote under the name of Mary Blair Beebe. She lived among indigenous peoples in Mexico, South America, and Southeast Asia. In 1923, she published Casual Wanderings in Ecuador. Colombia: Land of Miracles followed in 1924, and Peruvian Pageant in 1937. In these books she linked contemporary culture with the past by exploring history, traditions, and legends. She visited the notorious Devil's Island in 1926 and recorded the life of a prisoner there (René Belbenoit) in her 1928 best selling biography: Condemned to Devil's Island. The international sensation caused by this book led to prison reforms. Her 1931 book, Strange Brother, was a gay-themed novel (her only work in that genre) set in New York City during the Harlem Renaissance. Seller Inventory # 000459
