Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Kerouac's own copy - ink and blind stamp from the Kerouac Estate to half title page. Kerouac makes several pencil annotations to page 324, which is the section on Schopenhauer. He highlights and notes in the margin the line, leave well enough. He also annotates, life is evil because 'as soon as want and suffering permits man, ennui is at once so near that he necessarily requires diversion, - i.e., more suffering. Further down the page, he underlines, so 'life swings like a pendulum backward and forward between pain and ennui. These annotations indicate that Kerouac was engaging with Schopenhauer's pessimistic philosophy, which views life as fundamentally characterized by suffering and boredom. This engagement mirrors Kerouac's experiences in the mid-1960s: a period of career decline, disillusionment, alcoholism, isolation, and mortality contemplation.
