Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound, internally clean hardcover copy, with a bruised tip to rear board, abraded paper thereat, scuffing to paper at tips, fore-edge, sunning along the edges, else with neat and tidy paste-downs; not ex-library, with neither highlighting nor underlining. Light green, heavy paper over boards, black cloth-backed, gilt titling to spine. A fine full color portrait by Augustus John of the artist, dare I say, as a young man, at frontis. Introduction and Editorial Note by Theodore Spencer. Black-and-white photostat of an original page of the manuscript, printed on high-gloss paper, plus a reproduction of the pages of Joyce's college program, also in black-and-white. From the publisher's blurb, "STEPHEN HERO is an early version of Joyce s PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN, probably completed about 1906. Text block sound, though splitting along the top hinge, likely that a free front end paper is absent (first page is the half-title page). A forward roll to the spine. Contents clean and clear of spotting and lightly age-toned.
