Brown cloth with beautiful gilt and black illustration on the front board of a hookah smoker sitting at the fore of a warring party to his rear. Beautiful engraved plates of the author's own drawings. Square tight binding. Clean interior. Very little wear, save for a small closed separation along the bottom edge of frontis illustration. A superior edition.

Owner's name on enpapers, wear to spine ends and corners, but still a good to very good copy overall. Uncommon. Bombay to Muscat, Bagdad, Turkey, the Gulf to El Kerweik, Baghdad, west to Nisibin, Mount Mardin, Diabekir, Aleppo, and then on to Constantinople. Locher travelled in the caravan of the French attaché who intended to purchase Arab horses for Napoleon III.

Some light rubbing along the extremities with some wear to the lower corners but certainly very good. A journey by caravan from Bombay to Constantinople. "The description of objects, customs, and peculiar habits of the people, and the relating of amusing adventurous incidents are entirely from personal observations and experiences of the author, and do not refer in any manner to any preceding publication upon a kindred subject.As the caravan went into camp from time to time, unusual opportunities were afforded the author for excursions of exploration, investigation, and adventures with the rascally Bedouins common to the deserts of Persia and Arabia.".

First edition; 8vo (20.5 x 14.5 cm); 15 illustrated plates including frontispiece, three of which steel engravings; publisher's gilt pictorial cloth, a little faded, a very good copy: 634pp. Despite this journey being from Bombay to Constantinople, after stopping off at Muscat most of the narrative is about the time spent in Baghdad and the subsequent overland voyage to Aleppo, with comments made on the Bedouins and their 'rascally' nature.
