Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. The Book Club issue of the first American edition. 8vo. 256pp. Quarter black cloth with grey sides, lettered in gold at the spine and with the author's facsimile signature gold-stamped to the base of the upper board (the correct first edition binding is red backstrip cloth, not black). Publisher's orange top edge stain, very slightly faded. A narrow trace of light toning to the free endpapers and a little light spotting to the fore edge. Retail price sticker to the tip of the front free endpaper (which I have not attempted to remove). A very good copy in the later state Book Club issue dust wrapper, repeating the original design, but with four quotes to the rear panel instead of three, no price printed to the head of the front flap, but the base of the flap clipped (where the original Book Club identifier should be found). Rear flap printed in black instead of black and red, and here omitting the imprint details. A very good copy of the Book Club issue of the first American edition - not in itself uncommon and particularly desirable, but this copy considerably enhanced by the presence of a title-specific bookplate signed by the author and pasted to the front free endpaper. The author's third novel, winner of multiple awards including the 1963 Gold Dagger, the 1965 Edgar Award, and the 2005 'Dagger of Daggers'. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. SIGNED to title-page in the author's black, fountain pen ink. A scarce first edition thus in this signed state, and a key title in the increasingly popular "Penguin John Le Carré Hardback Collection." An exciting item. It's interesting to note how few of the titles issued in this elegant, uniform set of his novels ended up being signed by the great man: there was no scheduled, official signing event, and the author, in any case, was in his late eighties at this stage of his career. (This particular example is one of the Cornish copies that were signed locally at an independent bookshop in December 2019). As such, of all the various editions issued over the years of this masterwork, we believe this edition is destined to remain an extremely uncommon one, and one rich in rarity appeal. A truly fabulous copy, without flaws; a super investment, being a Very Fine (uncirculated) copy in a Very Fine example of the blue-and-white design dust-wrapper. (N.B. This jacket, in this instance, is not devalued here by the signed sticker roundel that seems to affect most). Offered by D B WATERS RARE BOOKS: Professional, full-time booksellers of fine, select 1st editions, established in 1998. As befits a rare book, all dust-wrappers are housed within transparent, removable protectors. All our stock is fully guaranteed as authentic, a sample of which is presented here on this website. As long-established specialist sellers, we never stock any first edition that is devalued by serious flaws such as price-clipping, dedications, remainder dots, or owner markings, etc. A small, boutique business with an enviable client base.
