Holly Black, born November 10, 1971, was raised in West Long Branch, New Jersey in "a decrepit Victorian home", something which fostered an early interest in the supernatural. While studying at Rutgers University, Black would edit and contribute to the role-playing culture magazine d8 in 1996. Black would name a number of authors as being inspirations for her writing, Tanith Lee, Angela Carter, and Charles de Lint being particular inspirations for the fairy tale aspects of her writing. In 2002 Black's first novel, "Tithe: A Modern Fairy Tale" was published by Simon and Schuster, spawning two sequels and setting the groundwork for "The Spiderwick Chronicles" for which she is best known. Toni DiTerlizzi, born September 6, 1969, was raised in South Florida, earning a graphic design degree from The Art Institute of For Lauderdale. He cites many influences, including Dr. Seuss, Heronymous Bosch, Jim Henson, David Trampier, and many others citing a desire to create fantasy art different from the oil-painting feel of the era. DiTerlizzi would do freelance work for the 1993 "Monstrous Manual" for Dungeons & Dragons, and getting the chance to redesign the 1994 "Plaescape Capaign Setting" and it's supplements, redesigning the entire Outer Planes of the game. "The Spiderwick Chronicles" and "Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles" were both created collaboratively by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi by DiTerlizzi's own account such that neither can claim full credit for writing or illustrating the series. The first book in the novel "The Field Guide" released in 2003 to warm reception, both the second "The Seeing Stone" and third "Lucinda's Secret" came out in the same year to similar acclaim. In 2008 a film adaptation titled "The Spiderwick Chronicles" released to middling reviews, a videogame of the same title based on the movie releasing that same year to similar reception. The main series and it's sequel "Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles" have become cult classics, many praising the art style and incorporation of various fairy-tale creatures and elements throughotu. 1384714.
