VII / 1825' on red and black leather labels, spine in five panels; minor rubbing to extremities, and a tiny bit of 'book wormish' superficial damage to leather at top edge of front outer hinge. Scattered light foxing throughout. An interesting early American periodical, not all religious content of sermons, but book reviews, long lists of new publications, 'Sketch of a Tour to Ohio', a review of Charles Butler's Reminiscences, Walter Scott's Waverly Novels and their imitations, sixteen pages on 'People of Colour' (anti-slavery) by S.F.D., more thoughts on the subject of slavery, specimens of Arabian Poetry, etc. This copy was David Thurston's (1779-1865) and is signed by him and dated 1825. Also with his cost ($3.00) and No. 207 noted. On the front pastedown endpaper is the large library label with typographic border (bookplate) of the Ministerial Library / the Property of the Congregational Church / Winthrop, ME / founded by their pastor / David Thurston, AD 1838. Thurston was a strong abolitionist, attended and signed the Anti-Slavery Convention Declaration of 1833.
