The author was a founder and president of the Alpine Club. Moreas I, 340: 'The author, a British tourist, first visited Rio on the way to Buenos Aires. He returned to Rio later, making excursions into the Sierra dos Orgaos, Petropolis, Therezopolis, and travelling to Juiz de Fora'. Sabin 31925: 'Highly commended by the Saturday Review'. Naylor 106. The author states: "The illustrations, with the exception of that which is taken from an interesting photograph of the ruins of Mendoza after the earthquake, are from rough sketches taken by myself upon the spot, and completed by the kindness of my friends. The map is upon too small a scale compared with the immensity of the country to enter upon much detail, but it is sufficient to give a general notion of the mighty basin of La Plata with the adjoining territories." Pasted on to inside front cover, J. Armstrong-Foster, "Chestwood," near Barnstaple, North Devon, with the date 6th February 1906 handwritten below. ?
