First edition, first printing. Published by Jonathan Cape in London, 1956. Without the dust wrapper. This is a very good copy. The publishers beige cloth boards are with some minor scuffing marks to the edges and some sparse spots of browning to the front and rear panels. The internals are mostly clean, but with some slight foxing and a small, neat previous owners inscription to the fly. The text blocks are slightly toned but remain clean. Overall, this is a very good copy. An unforgettable story of life during and after the Second World War, based on true accounts.

Hardcover. Condition: Poor. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. C. Walter Hodges (illustrator). 1st Edition. Light bumping to top & tail of spine with minute nick to bottom. Foxing and some light staining to fore-edge. Top edges lightly dust-stained. Light foxing to end papers and a few prelims. Owner's sticker to fep. The price-clipped d/w is water stained and rubbed and nicked. I'd like to say it's not as bad as it sounds but that would perhaps be stretching a point. However it's not the most common of titles.
